(a) What is Tropic of Cancer?
Ans: The Tropic of Cancer is located at approximately 23.44 degrees north of the Equator. It is the northernmost latitude where the Sun can be directly overhead at noon. This happens during the June solstice, when the Northern Hemisphere is tilted towards the Sun, marking the start of summer in that hemisphere.
(b) Name the three heat zones of the earth.
Ans: The Earth has three heat zones: the Frigid Zone, Temperate Zone, and Torrid Zone. The Torrid Zone, nearest to the equator, is the hottest due to its direct exposure to the Sun’s rays.
(c) What are parallels?
Ans: Lines of latitude, also called parallels, are imaginary lines running east to west that measure distance north or south from the Equator. The Equator, at 0 degrees latitude, is the most well-known parallel and divides the Earth into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
(d) What are meridians?
Ans: A meridian is an imaginary north–south line on the Earth’s surface that connects the geographic poles and indicates longitude. For instance, the 40th meridian has a longitude of 40° E or 40° W.
(e) Why is temperature very high in Torrid zones?
Ans: The Torrid Zone, located between the Tropic of Cancer (23.5° N) and the Tropic of Capricorn (23.5° S), receives the most heat from the Sun. In this region, the Sun’s rays are directly overhead at least once a year, leading to the highest temperatures.
(f) In which area of the heat zones is the equator located?
Ans: The Torrid Zone, nearest to the Equator, is characterised by extreme heat and distinct wet and dry phases, rather than the four seasons experienced in temperate regions.
(g) Why is water in frigid zone found in solid state?
Ans: In the Frigid Zone, water turns into ice due to extremely low temperatures. These freezing conditions cause the water to solidify, and as ice forms on the surface, trapped air bubbles become enclosed, reinforcing the solid state of the water.
