Answer the Following Question:
1. Describe the portrait of the author’s grandfather.
Ans: The portrait of the author’s grandfather shows him wearing a big turban and loose-fitting clothes. His long, white beard covers the best part of his chest, and he looks very old, almost a hundred years old. He does not appear to be a person who would have a wife or children but rather a lot of grandchildren.
2. What was the author’s first impression of his grandmother’s youth and beauty?
Ans: The author finds it hard to believe that his grandmother was once young and pretty. The thought of her being young and beautiful is almost revolting to him. He considers her always old and wrinkled.
3. What was the author’s grandmother’s daily routine in her old age?
Ans: The author’s grandmother would wake him up for school, say her morning prayers while bathing, and then help him get ready. She also fed sparrows in the afternoon, breaking bread into crumbs and smiling as the sparrows collected around her.
4. How did the author’s grandmother react to the changes in his education?
Ans: The author’s grandmother was disturbed when he started learning English and Western science. She did not believe in the things taught at the English school and was unhappy when music lessons were introduced, as she believed music had lewd associations.
5. What role did the grandmother play in the author’s education?
Ans: The grandmother used to wake him up and prepare him for school, giving him a wooden slate, ink-pot, and pen. She also accompanied him to the school, which was attached to the temple, where the children learned prayers and the alphabet.
6. What was the grandmother’s reaction when the author went to university?
Ans: When the author went to university, the bond between them was broken. His grandmother accepted her solitude with resignation and spent her time spinning and praying. She rarely talked to him after that.
