Long Question and Answer:
1. Write the differences between Philosophy and Science.
Ans: Although both Philosophy and Science aim at the pursuit of knowledge, there are major differences between them in terms of methodology, scope, and purpose:
(i) Science provides knowledge only about the external forms of objects, while philosophy seeks to know both the external forms and the underlying essence or reality.
(ii) Science accepts certain assumptions without question, such as the uniformity of nature, time, space, and causality. Philosophy, on the other hand, critically examines these assumptions through reasoning.
(iii) Science does not judge the value of objects or events; it only explains them. Philosophy, however, not only explains but also evaluates them in terms of ideals like truth, beauty, and goodness.
2. Explain Value Philosophy (Axiology).
Ans: Apart from epistemology and metaphysics, another important branch of philosophy is value philosophy or axiology. Philosophy aims at evaluating the world and life in terms of ideals and values. Hence, it studies values like Truth, Beauty, and Goodness.
Value philosophy examines these ideals in different branches:
(i) Logic emphasizes “Truth.”
(ii) Ethics emphasizes “Goodness” or “the highest good.”
(iii) Aesthetics emphasizes “Beauty.”
(iv) Philosophy of Religion emphasizes “Purity” or “Holiness.”
Value philosophy analyzes whether values are objective or subjective and explores their relationship with ultimate reality.
3. Write the relationship between Philosophy and Metaphysics.
Ans: Different philosophers have expressed different opinions regarding the relationship between philosophy and metaphysics:
(i) Idealist philosophers believe that philosophy and metaphysics are the same.
(ii) Empiricist philosophers deny any relationship between them, as they argue that knowledge must be based on experience, and metaphysics deals with non-experiential entities.
However, a close relationship exists between the two. Philosophy is broader in scope, but metaphysics is essential for complete philosophical knowledge. Thus, metaphysics is a crucial and inseparable branch of philosophy.
4. Write the similarities between Philosophy and Science.
Ans: (i) Both philosophy and science aim at understanding the world through reasoning and observation.
(ii) Both follow a systematic and organized approach while seeking knowledge.
(iii) Both rely on logic and reasoning to verify the truth of their conclusions.
