Best Time to Visit Maldives: Month-by-Month Guide (2026)

The short answer is December to April. That is the dry season, with clear skies, calm water and the best visibility for snorkelling. It is also when resort prices are at their highest, and that matters more than most guides admit.

The longer answer depends on what you care about most: guaranteed sunshine, a lower bill, or swimming with manta rays. The best month for one of those is often the worst month for another. This guide covers how the seasons actually work, what each month is like, and how to pick dates that suit your trip.

How the Maldives seasons work

The Maldives has no summer or winter. It stays warm all year, roughly 26°C to 31°C, and the sea rarely drops below 27°C. The weather is driven by two monsoons, and locals have names for both.

Iruvai (northeast monsoon), December to April. This is the dry season. The wind comes from the northeast, humidity falls, and you can go a week or more without seeing rain. The sea is usually flat and the water is very clear.

Hulhangu (southwest monsoon), May to November. This is the wet season. It brings more wind, more cloud and heavier rain. But “wet season” here does not mean it rains all day. A typical day might have a strong 40-minute downpour in the afternoon, followed by a few hours of sun. You may also get two or three grey days in a row. Both happen.

April and November are the transition months. They are often the smartest time to book.

The best time to visit Maldives, month by month

January to March: the classic dry season

If you want postcard weather and are fine with paying for it, book these months. February is usually the most reliable month of the year: dry, bright and calm. January is nearly as good. March gets a bit hotter but stays dry, and divers like it because visibility is often excellent.

The downside is cost. Overwater villas that are reasonably priced in September can cost twice as much in February. Popular resorts also fill up months in advance, especially around Valentine’s Day.

April: hot, calm and cheaper

April is the hottest month, and it is underrated. The sea is often glassy, the monsoon hasn’t started yet, and once the Easter rush ends, prices start to fall. If you don’t mind the heat (you will be in the water most of the day anyway), April gives you close to dry-season weather at a better price.

May to September: the wet season, and the deals

This is when you should go if budget matters most. Resorts cut rates heavily, and many add free upgrades, meal plans or extra nights.

What to expect:

  • Rain comes in bursts, not constant drizzle. Many days still get several hours of sun.
  • Seas are rougher, so some excursions get cancelled, and seaplane transfers can be delayed by weather.
  • Underwater visibility drops a little because of plankton. That same plankton is what attracts the big marine life.

September is usually the wettest month and the cheapest. June isn’t far behind. If you are flexible and want a five-star stay without five-star pricing, look at these months.

Manta rays and whale sharks: the wet-season bonus

This is where the usual “go December to April” advice falls short. Between roughly June and November, plankton gathers at Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll and draws in large groups of manta rays, sometimes a hundred or more at once. July to September is usually the peak. Hanifaru is a protected area with limited daily access, so book through your resort early.

South Ari Atoll has whale sharks all year, but August to November is often good there too. If seeing big marine life is the main goal of your trip, the wet season may actually be the better choice.

October and November: the sweet spot

These are the months I’d recommend to most people. The monsoon is fading, rain gets less frequent, and peak pricing hasn’t arrived yet. November in particular often has dry-season weather at shoulder-season prices.

October also lines up with Diwali holidays, so resorts popular with Indian travellers fill up quickly around those dates. Book early if your trip falls in that week.

December: two different months

The first half of December is pleasant and fairly priced. From around 20 December to the first week of January, prices peak for the year, minimum-stay rules apply (often 5 to 7 nights), and good villas sell out. If you want a Christmas or New Year trip, book by September.

Cheapest time to visit Maldives

May, June and September usually have the lowest resort rates, followed by July and October. Flights follow a similar pattern, apart from school holiday spikes. If you want to save money without risking the wettest stretch, aim for late April or early to mid November.

One more way to save money is to stay on a local island (Maafushi, Thoddoo, Dhigurah and others) instead of a private resort island. Guesthouses there cost much less all year. Keep in mind that local islands follow Maldivian law: no alcohol, and modest dress outside the designated “bikini beaches.”

Best time for a Maldives honeymoon

For guaranteed sunsets and calm water, February and March are the best months. For a balance of good weather and price, November or April works well. Many resorts run honeymoon offers in the wet season (free spa treatments, private dinners), so if you can accept a few rainy afternoons, a June honeymoon can feel more luxurious for the same money.

Best time for surfing and diving

  • Surfing: roughly March to October, when the southwest swell arrives. The North Malé atoll breaks are the best known. Calm dry-season days are bad for surf.
  • Diving: good all year, but it changes with the monsoon. During the northeast monsoon, the eastern sides of the atolls usually have better visibility. During the southwest monsoon, conditions flip and mantas gather on the opposite side. A good dive centre will choose sites based on this.

A few things people don’t mention

  • North vs south: The southern atolls (such as Addu and Gaafu) are closer to the equator and have less extreme seasons. It can rain there during the dry season, but the wet season is often milder too.
  • Ramadan: On local islands, cafés may close during the day. Resorts are not affected.
  • Seaplanes fly only in daylight. If your international flight lands late, you may need a night in Malé whatever the season, so factor that into your plans.
  • Travel insurance matters more May to November, mainly to cover weather-related transfer delays.

So, when should you go?

  • Best weather: January to March
  • Best value: April and November
  • Cheapest: May, June, September
  • Manta rays: July to September (Hanifaru Bay)
  • Surfing: March to October

There is no bad month to visit the Maldives, only trade-offs. Decide what matters most to you, whether that’s the weather, the price or the marine life, and choose your dates from there.
