1. What is the water cycle?

Ans: Water is a dynamic resource. The same water can be used repeatedly in different forms and for various purposes. Starting from the oceans, through small water bodies, the land surface, the atmosphere, and living beings — a continuous cyclic exchange of water occurs through a cyclic system. This global circulation of water is known as the Water Cycle (Hydrological Cycle).

2. What is an atoll?

Ans: An atoll is a ring-shaped island made up of coral skeletons, found mainly in tropical seas, and located near the sea surface.

3. Based on depth, into how many parts is the ocean floor divided? What are they?

Ans: The ocean floor is divided into four parts based on depth:

(i) Continental Shelf.

(ii) Continental Slope.

(iii) Deep Sea Plain or Abyssal Plain.

(iv) Oceanic Trench.

4. What is meant by Continental Shelf?

1. Discuss the Continental Shelf.

Ans: The continental shelf is the shallow part of the ocean floor adjoining the coastal region, generally extending up to a depth of 200 meters. Its slope is very gentle (around 1°). From the deepest part of the shelf, the slope increases sharply toward the continental slope.

The width of the continental shelf depends on the nature of coastal rocks, land slope, and wave intensity. On average, it extends up to about 80 km from the coastline but may vary from 1–2 km to even 1,500 km. For example, the continental shelf along the Chile coast is very narrow, whereas the one along northern Siberia extends up to 1,500 km.

The continental shelf receives sediments brought by rivers, glaciers, and ocean currents. Over time, these deposits form sedimentary rock layers, sometimes rich in fossil fuels such as petroleum and natural gas.
