4. Taplow was waiting because he had missed a day due to _________.

Ans: Illness.

5. Mrs. Crocker-Harris gave Taplow a _____________ to get from the chemist.

Ans: Prescription.

Answer the Following Question:

1. Who is Taplow, and why is he waiting at school?

Ans: Taplow is a sixteen-year-old student from the lower fifth class. He has come to school on the last day to complete extra work assigned by Mr. Crocker-Harris. This is because he missed a class earlier due to illness. Despite it being the last day and a fine afternoon perfect for playing golf, Taplow chooses to wait sincerely for his strict teacher.

2. How does Taplow describe Mr. Crocker-Harris’s nature?

Ans: Taplow describes Mr. Crocker-Harris as a strict, unemotional, and disciplined teacher who does not show any personal warmth or friendliness towards his students. He calls him “hardly human” and says that Mr. Crocker-Harris seems to hate when students like him, making him appear shriveled up emotionally.

3. Why does Taplow not leave even when Frank suggests he should?

Ans: Taplow is genuinely afraid of Mr. Crocker-Harris and respects his authority. He believes that disobeying him would result in serious consequences. Even when Frank suggests that Taplow could leave and play golf, Taplow refuses, saying that such a thing would never have been done in the whole time Mr. Crocker-Harris has been at the school.

4. Why does Taplow find Aeschylus boring and call it ‘muck’?

Ans: Taplow finds Aeschylus boring mainly because of the way it is taught by Mr. Crocker-Harris. He feels that it is just memorising a series of Greek words and being punished for mistakes. Though Taplow admits the story itself might be interesting, he believes that Mr. Crocker-Harris’s method of teaching makes it dull and unenjoyable.

5. What does Taplow reveal about Crocker-Harris’s teaching methods?

Ans: Taplow mentions that Mr. Crocker-Harris strictly follows school rules and teaches in a rigid manner. He focuses on literal translations and gives fifty lines of punishment if students get them wrong. Unlike other teachers who share results early, Mr. Crocker-Harris waits until the headmaster officially announces them, showing his adherence to discipline.
