TEXTUAL SOLUTIONS
Activity 16.1

1. Create compositions.

Choose one option from below and create a two-dimensional composition.

(i) Option A: Graphic story/ comic strip.

(ii) Option B: Thematic painting.

(iii) Option C: Collage.

Ans: Here is a guide on how to complete each of the options for Activity 16.1 based on the sources:

Option A: Graphic story/ comic strip For this option, you will create a four-part comic strip that tells a story using picture sequences and speech balloons. Your comic must feature at least two original characters, have a continuous story from one scene to the next, and take place in an indoor, outdoor, or imaginary setting.

Step 1: Ideate. Visualize four scenes based on conversations or incidents from your life and plan the dialogue.

Step 2: Layout. Divide an A4 sheet into four parts. You can vary the size and arrangement of the panels to add variety to your narration.

Step 3: Character Sketches. Create multiple simple sketches of your characters showing their clothing, expressions, and actions.

Step 4: Speech Balloons. Write your text in short sentences and choose speech balloons that match the dialogue’s tone, such as thinking, shouting, whispering, or dreaming.

Step 5: Composition & Finalization. Create two or three rough layouts for each scene, experimenting with character placement and proportions. Once you select the best iterations, finalize the drawing, color the scenes using appropriate contrast, and display your work.

Option B: Thematic painting For this option, you will create an original colored drawing or painting based on a specific theme.

Step 1 & 2: Materials and Size. Choose easily available, familiar materials. Your paper or canvas should be larger than A4 but smaller than A2.

Step 3: Choose a Theme. Pick a topic of interest from your imagination or observation. Create authentic images and avoid copying other artworks or using stereotypes.

Step 4 & 5: Iterations & Drawing. Decide the orientation (e.g., vertical rectangle, square, circle) and make several palm-sized sketches to experiment with balance and focus. Cut your paper to the desired shape and make a light pencil drawing of your final layout.

Step 6 & 7: Color. Plan a color scheme that conveys your intended emotions. Color the areas in focus first to set the tone for the rest of the composition. Experiment with different brushes and water amounts. Note: Use black sparingly and only apply plain black after all other colors are laid down.

Step 8 to 11: Finalize. Add the final details. Brainstorm three possible titles for your artwork and choose one (keeping in mind that the title is the name of the artwork, while the topic is its subject matter), and display it for your peers.

Option C: Collage This option is intended to be done collaboratively as group work.

Step 1 & 2: Materials and Size. Find easily available materials and ensure you have an adhesive that will stick properly to your base surface. The size of your collage must be larger than A2 but no bigger than a full-size chart paper.

Step 3 to 6: Planning. Follow the same process as Option B to choose a theme, create layout iterations, sketch the composition, and plan your color scheme.

Step 7: Experiment. As you build the collage, experiment with the edges of your materials by cutting them with scissors or tearing them by hand to create different effects.

Final Steps. Just as with Option B, complete your details, give your artwork a title, and display it for peer review.

EXERCISES

1. Which pair of speech balloons suit the dialogues below?

Child: Maa! Look at what I have made!

Parent: Shhh… your sister is sleeping. Come closer and show it to me.

Write a dialogue that you have had with your parents, teachers, or other elders and place them in suitable speech balloons to capture moods and expressions.

Ans: As I answered the first part of your exercise in our previous exchange, here is a response to the second part. Since I am an artificial intelligence and do not have parents or teachers, I have created a hypothetical dialogue for you to use. Please note that this specific conversational scenario is not from the sources, but the speech balloon classifications are directly based on the provided text.

Student: “I finally finished my huge science project!” Suitable Speech Balloon: An “I am happy!” balloon, to show your excitement and pride.

Teacher: “Excellent work! Now, quietly put it on my desk so you don’t disturb the others taking their test.” Suitable Speech Balloon: An “I am whispering” balloon, typically drawn with a dashed outline, to reflect the teacher’s hushed voice.

Student: (Internal thought) I hope I get an A on this… Suitable Speech Balloon: An “I am thinking” balloon, depicted as a fluffy cloud with small circles leading to it, to indicate an unspoken thought.

Parent: “Did you leave your messy project supplies all over the kitchen table again?!” Suitable Speech Balloon: An “I am angry” balloon, to capture the parent’s frustration and raised voice.
