Activity 6.1

My music journal:

1. Keep a journal dedicated to music, which you will maintain over Grades 9 and 10. In this journal, you will chronicle the songs that you listen to, learn, and create. You will also use it to document the various creative exercises you do. Musical texts and treatises often have creative names. What would you like to name your journal? Write your journal name in a decorative manner on the cover page.

Ans: Since musical texts and treatises often have creative names, you can choose a title that reflects the deep connection between sound, emotion, and life. 

Here are a few creative suggestions for your journal’s name inspired by the concepts in your textbook:

The Nāda Chronicles (Inspired by the concept that the whole phenomenon of the world is based on nāda or sound).

Swar Sangam: My Musical Journey.

The Navarasa Log (Inspired by the nine emotions awakened by music).

Echoes & Melodies: Once you choose a name, you should draw and colour it in a highly decorative, artistic manner on the physical cover page of your notebook to complete this activity!

Activity 6.2

Listening to various genres:

1. When you listen to a piece of music, write the name of the song and tick the genre. By the end of the year, try and listen to various genres of music.

1. Identify the genre of music:

Listen to the song played by your teacher in class.

Discuss the points given below.

Write the details of the song in your journal.

(i) Identify its genre. Which of its features helped you identify it?

(ii) Identify the musical instruments in this piece of music. Try and describe the sound of that instrument in words.

(iii) Identify the musicians who are singing or playing on this track. Is there something characteristic about their voice or style of singing/ playing?

(iv) Try and describe how listening to the song made you feel.

(v) If you could change something about the song, what would it be, and why?

Ans: Identify its genre. Which of its features helped you identify it? The genre is Folk music (or regional indigenous music). I identified it because the song is deeply rooted in regional customs and describes everyday community activities—specifically, clearing the forest, building a farm house, and sowing seeds for a good harvest.

Identify the musical instruments in this piece of music. Try and describe the sound of that instrument in words. (Example answer) The track mainly features human voices singing in harmony, accompanied by rhythmic beats that sound like traditional bamboo percussion or clapping. The sound is highly rhythmic, earthy, and hollow, providing a steady working beat for the farmers.

Identify the musicians who are singing or playing on this track. Is there something characteristic about their voice or style of singing/ playing? The song is sung by a chorus of women, representing the “damsels of Yingli Phom tribe”. A characteristic feature of their singing style is the strong, joyful group vocalization that travels far, which the lyrics describe as “heard even from distant land”.

Try and describe how listening to the song made you feel. Listening to this song made me feel energized, uplifted, and connected to nature. According to the Indian treatises on emotion in music, it awakened a sense of joy or hāsya rasa within me because of its happy and communal nature.

If you could change something about the song, what would it be, and why? (Example answer) If I could change something, I might add a very subtle, modern bass instrument (creating a fusion genre) to see how traditional farming songs sound when blended with modern rhythms, just to give it a slightly different groove.

When you do this activity in class, listen carefully to the structure of the song—such as whether it has a main chorus like a pallavī and verses like charaṇas —and fill in your journal with your own personal observations!
