Maheshwar
Chapter: 12
| Unit – 4: Up High |
A. Answer the following.
1. Who was Ahilya Bai?
Ans: She was a warrior queen from the great Holkar family who ruled over Maheshwar in Madhya Pradesh. She was known for her kindness and wisdom, protecting her people and building temples, schools, and wells.
2. Where is Maheshwar Fort located? What makes its location special?
Ans: The fort is located in Madhya Pradesh, 95 kilometers away from Indore, on the banks of the Narmada River. Its location is special because it is built on a hill, allowing a view of the entire kingdom, overlooking the town of Maheshwar on one side and the Narmada River on the other.
3. What materials were used to build Maheshwar Fort, and where did they come from?
Ans: The fort was built using special red stones that were brought from Gujarat and Rajasthan.
4. What does the statue of Queen Ahilya Bai in front of the palace represent?
Ans: The 13-foot tall statue stands like a guardian watching over her land.
B. Think and discuss.
1. Aarav and Ananya get excited about visiting Maheshwar Fort. What do you think makes historical places like this interesting?
Ans: They are interesting because they tell us stories about how people lived in the past, like Queen Ahilya Bai. We get to see unique architecture, like the overhanging balconies and grand staircases, which are different from modern buildings.
2. If you were Aarav or Ananya, what part of the fort would you be most excited to see—the overhanging balconies, the statue, or the temples? Why?
Ans: You might be most excited to see the overhanging balconies because Chachi mentioned they “seem to float in the air”, or the statue because it is very tall (13 feet) and represents the queen.
