A. Answer the following. 

1. Describe the Braille alphabet. 

Ans: The Braille alphabet is a method of reading through touch. It consists of raised dots and dashes. There is one Braille symbol for each of the twenty-six letters of the English alphabet. Because the letters cannot be written too close together, Braille requires more space than regular printing.

2. Why was ‘Night Writing’ not a success? 

Ans: Captain Charles Barbier’s ‘Night Writing’ was not a success because it was too difficult.

3. What did Louis Braille do to make reading easier for the blind? 

Ans: Louis Braille became interested in ‘Night Writing’ and simplified it. By doing so, he invented the Braille alphabet, which allowed blind people to read using their fingers.

B. Think and discuss.

1. You may have seen people with blindness walking with a white cane. Why is the cane always white-coloured?

Ans: In my opinion, the cane is white so that it stands out clearly against the road and surroundings, making it highly visible to everyone else. If I were driving or walking past, the bright white colour would immediately signal to me that the person holding it has a vision impairment. This helps ensure their safety by letting others know they might need extra space or assistance to navigate.

2. Imagine that the world becomes dark for a day and there is no light. What difficulties might one face on such a day?

Ans: If the world suddenly became dark for a day, I think my biggest difficulty would be moving around safely without bumping into obstacles, similar to how Louis Braille had to learn to live after his accident. I would not be able to read my standard storybooks because I need light to see the printed letters, just as soldiers needed “Night Writing” to read messages in the dark. I would have to rely entirely on my sense of touch to identify objects and shapes, exactly like how Braille works as a method of reading through touch.

B. Louis Braille lost his eyesight in an accident. 

Some time ago, a newspaper reported that a child lost one eye while lighting firecrackers. 

List the precautions that should be taken to protect eyes from harm.

Ans: (i) Do not light firecrackers while holding them in your hand or close to your face.

(ii) Maintain a safe distance when watching others light them.

(iii) If possible, wear protective glasses to prevent sparks from hitting the eyes. The following sentences describe actions in the present. Change them to the past as shown in the examples.
