1. Write the successor of 1, 10, 9999, 100000, 777779.

Ans: The successors are:

1 + 1 = 2 

10 + 1 = 11 

9999 + 1 = 10000 

100000 + 1 = 100001 

777779 + 1 = 777780

2. Is there any Natural number which has no successor?

Ans: No, there is no Natural number which has no successor.

3. Write the predecessor of 5, 11, 7779, 1000, 10001.

Ans: The predecessors are: 

5 – 1 = 4 

11 – 1 = 10 

7779 – 1 = 7778 

1000 – 1 = 999

10001 – 1 = 10,000

4. Is there any natural number that has no predecessor?

Ans: Yes. The predecessor of the natural number 1 is not a natural number.

5. Is there any largest natural number? Your friend writes a bigger number and claims that number is the largest natural number. How can you convince your friend that he is not correct?

Ans: No, because all the whole numbers are not natural numbers.

6. Are all whole numbers also natural numbers?

Ans: No. Zero (0) is a whole number but not a natural number.

7. Which is the smallest whole number?

7. In each of the following pairs of whole numbers state which whole number is on the right of the other number on the number line. Also write them with the appropriate sign (>, <) between them.

(a) 100, 99

Ans: 100 is placed on the right of 99 on the number line. 100 > 99.

(b) 911,899

Ans: 911 is placed on the right of 899 on the number line. 911 > 899.

(c) 0, 1

Ans: 1 is placed on the right of 0 on the number line. 0 < 1.

(d) 9999, 10000

Ans: 10000 is placed on the right of 9999 on the number line. 9999 < 10000.

(e) 2111, 1222

Ans: 2111 is placed on the right of 1222 on the number line. 2111 > 1222.

Ans: 99 x 25 x 4 

= 25 x 4 x 99 

= 100 x 99

(b) 25 x 8 x 5

= 25 x 5 x 8 

= 125 x 8 

= 1000

(c) 4 x 45 x 50

Ans: 4 x 45 x 50

= 50 x 4 x 45 

= 200 x 45 

= 9000

2. Fill in the blank spaces with appropriate number.

(a) 2 x (5 x 7) = 2 x…..+ 2 x……

Ans: 2 x (5 x 7) = 2 x 5 + 2 x 7

5. Solve the following by using appropriate property and also name the property:

(a) 737 + 263 + 234.

Ans: 737 + 263 + 234

= (737 + 263) + 234 (Associative law of addition)

= 737 + 234 

= 1234

(b) 968 × 5 × 200.

Ans: 968 × 5 × 200

= 200 × 5 × 968 (Associative law of addition)

= 1000 × 968 

= 968000 

(c) 45 x 85 + 45 x 15.

Ans: 45 × 85 + 45 × 15

= 45 × (85+15) (Distributive law for multiplication)

= 45 × 100 

= 4500

(d) 999 + 876 + 1.

Ans: 999 + 876 + 1

= 999 + (876 + 1) (Associative law of addition)

= 999 + 877

= 1876

(e) 125 × 576 x 8.

Ans: 125 x 576 x 8

= 125(576 x 8)

= 125(8 x 576) (Associative law of multiplication)

= (125 x 8) x 576

= 1000 x 576

= 576000

(f) 397 x 75 + 25 x 397.

Ans: 397 x 75 + 25 x 397

= 397 x (75 + 25) (Distributive law for multiplication)

= 397 x 100

= 39700 

6. (a) Are whole numbers closed under addition? Give one example.

Ans: Yes, eg. 7 + 3 = 10, 3 + 7 = 10

(b) Are whole numbers closed under subtraction? Give one example.

Ans: No. eg. 9 – 5 ≠ 5 – 9

7.(a) Are whole numbers closed under multiplication? Give one example.

Ans: Yes, eg. 3 x 5 = 15, 5 x 3 = 15

(b) Are whole numbers closed under division? Give one example.

Ans: No. eg. 3 ÷ 4 = ¾, 4 ÷ 3 = 4 / 3
