1. Describe the general characteristics of Aeolian (wind) action.
Ans: Aeolian action refers to the geomorphic processes carried out by wind, mainly in dry and hot desert regions.
In these regions, due to the lack of vegetation, high evaporation, and rocky terrain, wind activity becomes more prominent. Extreme temperature fluctuations cause rocks to break into fine dust. The wind then moves both vertically and horizontally, increasing its erosive force.Wind performs three main erosional actions — deflation, abrasion, and attrition. In deflation, the wind removes loose sand and dust, lowering the surface level.In abrasion, the blown particles hit rock surfaces and polish or wear them down. In attrition, the wind-blown particles collide with each other, becoming smaller and rounder.
2. Explain the erosional landforms produced by wind.
Ans: Wind erosion creates landforms mainly through deflation, abrasion, and attrition.Due to differences in wind speed near the surface and at higher levels, upper rocks erode faster, forming Mushroom Rocks.Continuous deflation may form deep depressions, and if these reach the groundwater level, Oases are created.In areas where soft rock layers erode more quickly than hard ones, Yardangs (long, narrow ridges) are formed.Abrasion also forms small smooth rock ridges known as Zeugens.Over time, isolated residual hills known as Inselbergs develop, and ripple marks appear on sandy surfaces.
