Think about it-

1.”Ausable did not fit any description of a secret agent fowler had ever read.” What do secret agents in books and films look like, in your opinion? Discuss in groups or In class some stories or movies featuring spies, detectives and secret agents, and compare their appearance with that of ausable in this story. (you may mention characters from fiction in languages other than English. In English fiction you may have come across Sherlock Holmes, Hercule poirot, or miss Marple. Have you watched any movies featuring James bond?

Ans: Secret agents in fiction are projected like ideal men, ‘Tall dark and handsome’. They are usually well built and keep beautiful women for company. They would always smoke pipes or cigars and do death defying stunts. But in our story, an ausable person is very fat but he has an excellent presence of mind. In fiction or film such characters are projected as men of extra – ordinary presence of mind.

Yes, I have watched some movies featuring James bond. They are :007 James bond, the golden eye and tomorrow never dies.

2. How does Ausable manage to make Max believe that there is a balcony attached to his room? Look back at his detailed description of it. What makes it a convincing story?

Ans: When Ausable saw Max standing in the middle of his room with a pistol pointed at him, he was not surprised. Instead he hatched a secret plan to get rid of him. Ausable starts by expressing his frustration at someone getting into his room for the second time in a month through the balcony.

Ausable, paid no attention to Max, instead he goes on to give a description of the balcony and how it could reach from two floors down to get a convenient passage into his room. While this talk was going on someone was continuously knocking at the door. Ausable said that the police who were at the door came to check him and his room on a regular basis.

Ausable presented the entire story about the balcony as if it was completely natural. His attitude, manner of speaking and confidence in relating to the balcony all go towards making Max believe that there is a balcony attached to Ausable’s room.

3. Looking back at the story, when do you think Ausable thought up his plan for getting rid of max? Do you think he had worked out his plan in detail right from the beginning? Or did he make up a plan taking advantage of events as they happened?

Ans: In fact, Ausable saw Max in his room as soon as he switched on the light. No, I don’t think that he had worked out his plan in detail right from the very beginning. He took advantage of the events as they happened. He used his presence of mind. Seeing the pistol in Max’s hand he planned to get rid of him.

Talk about it-

1. In this story, Ausable shows great ‘presence of mind’ or the ability to think quickly, and act calmly and wisely, in a situation of danger and surprise. Give examples from your own experience, or narrate a story, which shows someone’s presence of mind.

Ans: Once me and friends went for a trip in a hill area. We reached the venue and enjoyed it a lot. Then we pack our bags to start a journey back to home. The bus starts and we all are singing, chilling and enjoying the view. All of sudden, a truck came very fast and our bus got stuck in the middle of the hill and ditch. We all are very frightened. The bus driver was very panicked at that moment. We all asked him not to panic but to calm down and handle the situation very calmly. We studied the format of the road and the bus driver slowly slowly started to turn the bus. With the great presence of mind. We all succeed. We all are safe, we thank God and start singing. We reached home safely.

2. Discuss what you would do in the situations described below. Remember that presence of mind comes out of a state of mental preparedness. If you have thought about possible problems or dangers, and about how to act in such situations, you have a better chance of dealing with such situations if they do arise.

1. A small fire starts. Your kitchen.

2. A child starts to choke on a piece of food.

3. An electrical appliance starts to hiss and gives out sparks.

4. A bicycle knocks down a pedestrian.

5. It rains continuously for more than twenty-four hours.

6. A member of your family does not return home at the usual or expected time.

Ans: 1. If there is a fire in my kitchen, first I turn off the cylinder. Then use a blanket to extinguish the fire. I will  call the fire brigade and inform everyone to be alert.

2. If a child starts choking on a piece of food the child should be thumped slowly. Keep her safe, one person should be by her side and give her proper instructions.

3. If an electrical appliance gives out spark, the main switch should at once be put to off mode. Then we should keep out of reach and call an electrician.

4. In case of a bicycle accident the pedestrian should at once be attended. He should be given first aid and taken to the hospital for a check up.
