Ans: Home Science is also known as “family life education and education for family living” as it gives information and knowledge on all aspects of family life and the fulfilment of different family needs and demands through proper utilization of available resources.
Home Science or the science of managing a home, includes all the things that concern. ourselves, our home, our family members and our resources.
(b) Give the importance of Home Science?
Ans: The present is an of science and technology With the rapid advancement of education and society, the importance of Home Science education has increased considerably. Home Science has been included as an important vocational subject in the curriculum of second- ary, higher secondary, under-graduate and post-graduate levels of education.
The importance of this education has been highlighted below:
(i) Home Science education provides knowledge to the students to tackle household problems, to undertake family responsibilities and to do creative work in an effective manner.
(ii) Through the study of Home Science, students acquire scientific and technological knowledge to become self-sufficient, self-reliant and professional. Moreover, it helps to develop the skills to work through scientific methods by properly utilising labour, energy and time.

Ans: The different components of Home Science are mentioned below:
(i) Food and Nutrition: It is one of the most important branches of Home Science. For healthy growth and development, balanced and adequate diet is required. The different nutrients needed by the body like proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, fats and mineral salts can be obtained from consuming different foodstuffs. By studying this subject, students are able to know about the biological Home Science functions of nutrients and their importance, amount of nutrients present in foodstuff and daily requirement of Nutrients according to the age of family members etc. Students acquire knowledge regarding classification of food groups, functions of food, different diseases due to the deficiency of nutrients, their signs and symptoms, preven-tion and control measures of deficiency diseases. The students can understand the principles of meal planning, different factors affecting meal planning like age, occupa-tion, labours, family income, climate and interest etc.
(ii) Child Development: This component includes different topics like concept of Child development, principles of growth and development, different aspects of development, moral intellectual etc. They learn about factors influencing growth and development like heredity, environment, maturation and learning, know about developmental tasks of children and adolescents, formation of good habit and interests of the children, childhood problems, importance of preschool educa-tion and selection of suitable toys for children etc.
(iii) Home Management: This subject helps students to know about the uses of family resources effectively. They learn the different aspects of house planning, selection of sites and houses and constructions of houses, Besides, they also learn the management of money, budget planning, different methods of saving and investment, different principles of interior decoration like balance, proportion, emphasis, harmony and rhythm. They get knowledge about selection, care and arrangement of furniture, colour schemes for different rooms, different principles in flower arrangement etc. They learn about the principles and techniques of work simplification, uses and care of different electrical equipments, controlling and preventive measures of household pests etc. The girl students can learn management of family resources to achieve individual or family goals through different process of management and can manage their homes smoothly and effectively.
(iv) Clothing and Textiles: After studying this subject, the students can learn about fibres and their identification, characteristics, properties, and qualities. The student can also select proper clothings for different age group of family members, purchasing of clothing, storage and care of clothing according to seasons, laundering and finishing process of clothing etc.
(v) Home Science Education and Extension: Through this subject the students learn the aims and objectives, teaching methods, scope, different components and the history of Home Science. They also learn the principles of Home Science extension education, objectives, role, duties and responsibilities of an extension worker and different extension teaching methods, use and preparation of teaching aids.
