TEXTUAL SOLUTIONS
Activity 12.5

A creative Rāmāyaṇa presentation.

(i) In groups of three or four, select any episode from the Rāmāyaṇa and present it through a dance sequence in a style of the group’s choice.

(ii) Each group member may play a different role or character from the chosen episode.

(iii) As you choreograph, explore whether elements from different Rāmāyaṇa presentations can be thoughtfully incorporated into your interpretation, such as characteristic gestures, group formations, musical patterns, costumes, or storytelling styles.

(iv) The groups may choose any movement vocabulary or a combination of styles they are comfortable with to best present the episode.

Ans: Since this is a practical group activity, here is a hypothetical example of how a group could approach this task: A group could choose the episode of Hanumān discovering Sītā in Laṅkā. The group members can each take on the roles of Hanumān, Sītā, and Rāvaṇa. To creatively incorporate different styles, the student playing Hanumān could use characteristic gestures from the Thai classical masked dance-drama form Khon or Cambodian Reamker, while the other characters could use Indian classical or contemporary movement vocabularies. By fusing these styles, the group explores the shared movement vocabulary of South Asian traditions while maintaining respect for the different ways the Rāmāyaṇa is interpreted.

EXERCISES

1. Name a dance form that has a global presence. Describe where it is performed and by whom.

Ans: Bhangra and Dandiya are two dance forms that have a strong global presence. They have travelled beyond India’s borders with the Indian diaspora and are now performed and enjoyed by wider local communities across the world, promoting cross-cultural relations. For example, Bhangra is performed globally in flashmobs in Birmingham, during half-time performances at NBA games in the USA, at stage competitions in Singapore, as well as traditionally during Lohri celebrations in Punjab.

3. What is the importance of taking consent from the interviewee as a part of the production process of any podcast/ interview.

Ans: While the specific text provided for the podcast production activity (Activity 12.4) outlines the stages of planning, recording, and editing the interview, it does not explicitly mention the word “consent.” However, based on general ethical practices (this information is outside of your sources), taking consent is a crucial step.
