1. Fig. 11.9 shows items related to natural resources. Match them with their jumbled up names. Make another table and write the names of these resources. Classify these resources as renewable or non-renewable.
Ans:
2. State whether the following statements are True [T] or False [F]. If False, correct them.
(i) Nature has all the resources to meet human needs. [ ]
Ans: True.
(ii) Machines are a resource found in nature. [ ]
Ans: False.
Correction: Machines are human-made resources.
(iii) Natural gas is a non-renewable resource. [ ]
Ans: True.
(iv) Air is a renewable resource. [ ]
Ans: True.
3. Fill in the blanks using the most appropriate option-
(i) A fuel that is commonly used in two wheelers like scooters or bikes is ____________.
(a) Kerosene.
(b) Petrol.
(c) Diesel.
(d) LPG.
Ans: (b) Petrol.
(ii) An example of a renewable resource is ____________.
(a) Coal.
(b) Water.
(c) Natural gas.
(d) Petrol.
Ans: (b) Water.
4. Classify the following as renewable or non-renewable resources—coal, natural gas, forests and minerals.
Ans: Coal – non-renewable.
Natural gas – non-renewable.
Forests – renewable.
Minerals – renewable.
5. Why do we say that petroleum is a non-renewable resource?
Ans: Petroleum is a non-renewable resource because it takes millions of years to form. They are formed primarily from the remains of microorganisms and plants that got buried deep inside the earth. It is found in limited quantities, and once used, it cannot be replenished.
6. It is difficult to regrow forests. Justify this statement.
Ans: Regrowing forests is difficult because it takes many years for trees to mature. Additionally, the soil may become degraded, losing its nutrients and structure due to deforestation, making it less suitable for new plant growth. Human activities such as urban development and agriculture can also hinder reforestation efforts.
7. Make a list of five daily activities in which you use natural resources. Suggest ways by which you can reduce their use.
Ans: List of five daily activities in which you use natural resources:
(i) We use water for watering plants, washing clothes and bathing.
Reduce Use: Take shorter showers, use a bucket instead of a running tap, and wash full loads of clothes instead of small batches.
(ii) We use fuels in vehicles.
Reduce Use: Walk, cycle, use public transport, or carpool instead of using personal vehicles frequently.
(iii) We use electricity and coal is used to generate electricity.
Reduce Use: Switch off lights and fans when not needed, use energy-efficient LED bulbs, and unplug devices when not in use.
(iv) We use paper for writing and painting.
Reduce Use: Opt for digital notes, print only when necessary, and use both sides of the paper.
(v) We use LPG ,Electricity, and firewood for cooking food.
Reduce Use: Use energy-efficient appliances. Cover pots while cooking to reduce cooking time. Use solar cookers when possible.
8. List four activities that are possible due to the presence of air.
Ans: Four activities that are possible due to presence of air:
(i) Breathing.
(ii) Generating electricity through wind turbines.
(iii) Transportation through aeroplanes.
(iv) Flying kites.
9. How can you contribute towards enhancing the green cover of your locality? Make a list of actions to be taken.
Ans: List of actions to be taken:
(i) Encourage neighbours to grow more plants in their gardens.
(ii) Protecting existing trees from being cut down.
(iii) Organize workshops, social media campaigns, and events on environmental conservation.
(iv) Organize tree plantation drives in parks, roadsides, and open spaces.
(v) Conduct eco-clubs, competitions, and plantation drives to involve children in environmental protection.
10. In the given illustration, we see that food is being cooked.
Answer the following questions—
(i) What type of energy is being used for cooking?
Ans: Energy being used for cooking is in the image of Solar Energy.
(ii) Name one benefit and one drawback of using this type of energy for cooking.
Ans: Benefit: Solar energy is a renewable and clean source of energy. Hence it is environment friendly.
Drawback:
Dependence on Weather: Solar energy cannot be used during cloudy days or at night, which limits its reliability and convenience.
11. Cutting down trees on a large scale impacts the quality of the soil. Why do you think it is so?
Ans: Cutting down trees on a large scale impacts the quality of the soil because tree roots help in binding the soil and thus prevents soil erosion. Without the trees, the roots are no longer holding the soil together and can be easily washed away by rain or blown away by wind, leading to loss of fertile topsoil.
12. Explain two ways in which human activities pollute the air. Propose one action which can help in reducing air pollution.
Ans: (i) Burning fossil fuels in vehicles and factories releases harmful pollutants like Carbon monoxide and Sulphur dioxide into the air.
(ii) Deforestation reduces the number of trees that can absorb carbon dioxide, increasing the concentration of greenhouse gases.
Action to reduce air pollution:
Encouraging the use of renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, can significantly reduce air pollution by minimizing dependence on fossil fuels and reducing industrial emissions.
13. A family uses solar panels to generate electricity, a gas stove to cook food and a windmill for pumping water from a well. What would happen if there were no sunlight for a week?
Ans: If there were no sunlight for a week, the solar panels would not generate electricity. leading to a power shortage for the family. They would need an alternative energy source. such as stored electricity or a backup generator, to fulfil their energy needs. The gas stove and windmill would not be affected by the lack of sunlight, so cooking food and pumping water could continue normally.
14. Fill up the blanks using the following terms—
(Fossil fuels, forest, air, petroleum, coal, water and non renewable resource)
Ans:
