Ans: No, we know that different organisms eat different kinds of food. For animals such as buffalo and cow eat grass, oil cake, hay, grain and leaf. Rat eats grains and leftovers. Lion and tiger eat other animals. Human being eats bread, rice, fruits and vegetables. House lizards eat small insects and crow eats meat and other food items. example In this way we can say that different organisms eat different kinds of food.

Q. 1. What is food? Why should eat cooked food?

Ans: Food: The eatable substances eaten by humans and other animals to get energy for various activities for growth and development is called food.

We should eat cooked food because by cooking we can kill harmful germs and make it germless. Cooked food can be easily digested and absorbed by our body. Cooking also improves the taste of food.

Q. 2. (i) Name the different parts of banana that are used as food.

(ii) Name the three products provided by plants.

(iii) Name the three products provided by animals.

Ans: (i) Flower, fruit and stem of banana.

(ii) Plant Products: Grains, Cereals and Vegetables.

3. What are the food habits of people of Northern Region of India?

Ans: People of Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh eat chapatti of wheat, paranthas, pulses and drink buttermilk (lassi). The reason is they grow enough wheat and pulses. In Himachal region, rice is also eaten. There is enough grass for milk-yielding animals. So, they produce maximum milk. Therefore, people’s food abounds with milk and milk products also.

Q. 4. What are the food habits of people of Southern Region of India?

Ans: These areas are closer to the sea and there is enough rainfall for production of rice. Hence, food items of people of these areas are mainly sea animals, fish and rice. Coconuts are also available in plenty and make an energy giving food.

People eat idli, dosa, sambhar and other preparations of rice, banana chips and coconut. use coconut oil as medium of cooking.

Q. 5. What are the food habits of people of Eastern Region of India?

Ans: In Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha and Assam, people are predominantly rice and fish eating. The region is full of rivers and part of West Bengal and Odisha is surrounded by sea. So, they produce lot of fish and sea food. Naturally, they have the habit of eating rice and fish.

Q. 6. What are the food habits of people of Western Region of India?

Ans: Gujarat, Maharashtra and Goa have enough fish from sea and rivers. Rice is the main crop because of abundant rainfall. They eat rice and rice products as well as fish and other sea foods. They also like to have dhokla, pulses and groundnut products.

Q. 7. What are the characteristics of herbivores?

Ans: Characteristics of herbivores:

(i) Herbivores like horse, cow, goat have wide blunt teeth. They are able to pull plants off the ground. The grinding teeth are broad and strong for grinding herbs.

(ii) Some animals like camel, cow and buffalo fill the stomach with food without chewing. After some time, they bring back the already swallowed food in the mouth for proper grinding which is called cuddling. This helps them in digesting hard plant products

Ans: Most of the food which we eat is processed or cooked. We hardly eat anything which is raw except for fruits and salads.

Cooking is a way of processing food that involves heating, boiling in water, frying oil, roasting, steaming or baking. Cooking not only improves taste but also makes food easier to digest. However, overcooking like deep frying can destroy nutrients and reduce the nutritive value of food.

Ans: Carnivores have the following characteristics :

(ii) Carnivores such as chameleon and frog have a long, sticky tongue to catch their prey. 

(iii) Carnivores such as eagle and vulture have pointed curved beaks to flesh.


Q. 1. Write five steps to avoid wastage of food.

Ans: Steps to avoid wastage of food: 

(i) All concerned must ensure that at every stage of food production, it does not get wasted, spoiled or eaten away by birds, rats and insects.

(ii) During storage it must be protected from spoilage or from being eaten away by rodents and insects.

(iii) While taking our meals ensure that we take only that much quantity of food which we can eat. Nothing should be left in the plate.

(iv) We should eat only that much food which is good for us. Excess intake of food causes obesity.

(v) We should eat food which is easily available in the region and is seasonal. 

Q. 2. What food materials come from animals?

Ans: Food obtained from animals includes meat, fish, milk, eggs and honey. 

(i) Meat: We get meat from animals such as goat (mutton) and chicken.

(ii) Fish: Many kinds of fish are eaten. Fishes may be fresh water or sea water fish The quality of food of both types of fish is good.

(iii) Milk: We get milk from animals such as cow, goat and buffalo. Milk is used to make products such as cottage cheese (paneer), cheese, butter, curds and ghee.

(iv) Eggs: We get eggs from birds such as hen, goose and duck.

(v) Honey: We get honey from the hive of honey bees. Honey bees prepare honey using nectar from flowers.

Q. 3. What food materials come from different parts of plants? (Five)

Ans: We eat different parts of plants:

(i) Root: Carrot, radish, turnip and beet root are examples of roots that we eat.

(ii) Stem: Sugarcane, potato, ginger, onion and garlic are examples of stems that we eat. These are special stems that grow under the ground.

(iii) Leaf: Lettuce, spinach, cabbage and mint are examples of leaves that we eat.

(iv) Flower: Cauliflower and flowers of pumpkin and banana plants are examples of flowers that we eat. Cloves, which are used as a spice are dried flower buds.

(v) Fruit: Apple, orange, mango and pear are examples of fruits that we eat.
