1. Describe the four types of clouds.

Ans: The four types of clouds are:

(i) Cirrus Clouds: Formed at a height of 8,000–12,000 meters above the Earth’s surface. They are white in color, soft, and appear like cotton or wool tufts. They consist of tiny ice crystals and are seen in fair weather.

(ii) Cumulus Clouds: These are dark or gray clouds found at heights of 4,000–7,000 meters. They appear dome-shaped and are formed due to the upward movement of warm and moist air. Their base looks very broad.

(iii) Stratus Clouds: These cover a large part of the sky in layers. They form at about 1,000 meters above the surface when temperature decreases or when moisture increases in the air. They appear in layers at different heights depending on temperature.

(iv) Nimbus or Rain-bearing Clouds: These are dark gray or black clouds that extend vertically from near the Earth’s surface up to about 12,000 meters (in case of cumulonimbus clouds). They are very dense and block sunlight, causing heavy rain.
