Q.1. What are parallels of latitude?

Ans. Parallels of Latitude: The parallels of latitude refer to the angular distance in degrees, minutes and seconds of a point north or south of the Equator. Lines of latitude are often referred to as parallels.

Ans. Meridians of Longitude: The meridians of longitude refer to the angular distance, in degrees, minutes and seconds of a point east or west of the Prime (Greenwich) Meridian. Lines of longitude are often referred to as meridians.

SHORT ANSWER TYPE QUESTIONS

Q.1. Which are the two natural points of reference on the earth?

Ans. North Pole and South Pole.

Q.2. What is the great circle?

Ans. Equator is the great circle.

Q.3. What are coordinates?

Ans. Latitudes and longitudes are the coordinates.

Q.4. Why does the sun appear to be moving from east to west?

Ans. The sun appears to be moving from east to west because the earth rotates from west to east.

Q.5. What is meant by local time?

Ans. The simple old way of determining time was adjust the clock at noon when the sun would cross the local meridian and the shadows would be at their shortest. Time calculated by position of the sun at noon of a given place is called local time.

LONG ANSWER TYPE QUESTIONS

Q.1. Explain standard time.

Ans. In order to maintain uniformity of time as far as possible within the territorial limits of a country, the time at central meridian of the country is taken as the standard meridian and its local time is taken as the standard time for the whole country. The standard meridian is selected in a manner that it is divisible by 15° or by 7°.30′ so that the difference between its standard time and Greenwich mean time may be expressed as multiples of an hour or half an hour.
