Activities

1. Let’s find out how much we have understood.

(a) What is a hobby?

Ans : Activities that give us fun and joy are hobbies.

(b) What do hobbies give us?

Ans : Hobbies give us pleasure.

(c) What is philately? What difficulty would you face if you take up philately.

Ans : Philately is to collect postel stamps and study them If I take up philately then I would face a difficulty. The difficulty is that nowa days people mostly use e-mail, SMS, MMS etc for communication. People do not write letters and send them by post. So it is becoming difficult to get stamps easily.

(d) What is Irfan’s hobby? What does he like to do?

Ans : Irfan’s hobby is painting. He likes to sit and paint landscape. 

(e) Name a few indoor and out door hobbies.

Ans: Collecting stamps, coins, listening to music and reading books are indoor hobbies and gardening, travelling, swimiming, football playing etc are out door hobbics.

( f ) What is a kitchen garden?

Ans : Kitchen garden is a vegetables garden of a family for own us.

(g) “Every morning I water the plants and clean the beds.”-what does ‘bed’ means here?

Ans : ‘Bed’ here means the peace of ground where plants or vegetables are grown.

Q.2. A synonym is a word that has the same or nearly the same meaning as another word. Example: happy joyful.

4. Let’s play a game. Sit in groups according to your hobbies. Discuss in your group why you like this hobby and how you pursue it.

The teacher will make the students sit in groups- and ask the participants of each group to speak in turns. One participant will start with one sentence about his or her hobby and the next participant will continue the presentation.

5. Parveen’s hobby is baking. Fill in the blanks in the paragraph below with words that rhyme with bake, such as shake.

Juri said to Parveen, “Please tell me how to bake a…….”Parveen replicd, “Preheat the oven to 350° F and gather all the ingredients you need to………a cake………2 cups of  flour, 4 eggs, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup butter or oil, I teaspoonful baking powder and vanilla essence. You will need a cake pan and a sieve too. Put the flour and baking powder into the sieve……… the sieve to remove lumps, if any. Creak the butter and sugar. Add a few drops of vanilla essence………..the mixture light and creamy. Beat in the eggs and……….them one at a time. Add the dry mixture to the wet mixture little by little. Don’t forget to grease the……….pan and dust it with flour. then…….. the smooth mixture and pour it into the pan. Place the mixture in the oven till your………… turns golden brown.”

Take care to make the mixture light and creamy. Beat in the eggs and bake them one at a time. Add the dry mixture to the wet mixture little by little. Don’t forget to grease the back pan and dust it with flour. Then take the smooth mixture and pour it into the pan. Place the mixture in the oven till your cake turns golden brown.”

6. Roktim’s hobby is traveling. He loves visiting places. He always prepares his itinerary before traveling. He leaves his itinerary with his mother. His mother knows where he is by looking at his itinerary. Read his itinerary.

Ans : The part of the sentence in italics is called an idiom. It means ‘very busy’.

(b) The use of comon idioms makes English appcar more natural. Some common English idioms are: 

a blessing in disguise

Bag and baggage

beat about the bush

Try to use these idioms in sentences of your own. You can look up the dictionary to look up dictionary to learn their meanings.

Ans : a blessing in disguise : The blood of Assam is a blessing in disguise as it leaves land fertile.

          bag and baggage : the refugees arrived at the station bag and baggage.

          beat about the bush : Come to the point and do not beat about the bush.

Q. 8. In class VI you learned that we can make a new word by adding a suffix, i.e., a letter or group of letters at the end of a word.  In the exercise below, write the end of the words.
