Unit 1.1 – Introduction to Automobile

A. Unit Objectives: At the end of this unit, participants will be able to know about:

1. Explain about automobile industry.

Ans: The Indian automobile industry is one of the largest globally, contributing about 10% to India’s GDP and expected to create 65 million jobs. Post World War II, the industry modernized rapidly, with the US producing large, fast cars, while Japan later introduced smaller, economical models during the 1973 oil crisis. India’s auto industry began with imports in the 1920s and manufacturing in the 1940s. The establishment of Maruti Udyog in 1983 with Suzuki marked a turning point, producing popular models like the Maruti 800 and expanding rapidly. By the 1990s, global manufacturers such as General Motors, Ford, and Hyundai also started producing cars in India. Today, India ranks sixth in global automobile production and fourth in passenger cars, with major manufacturing clusters in the south (Chennai), west (Maharashtra and Gujarat), and north (Haryana). Chennai is known as the “Detroit of India” and the largest exporter. Major Indian manufacturers include Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Mahindra, and several multinational companies operating plants across the country. India also exports about 12% of its cars worldwide.

(iii) Manufacturer or Make of the Vehicle: Tata, Maruti, Suzuki, Ashok Leyland, Mahindra, Honda, Hyundai, Toyota, Ford, Fiat, Chevrolet, Audi, Mercedes, Isuzu, Skoda, Volkswagen.

(iv) Model: Year of manufacturing or chassis code number: Maruti’s first model called Maruti 800 became a big success. Within 5-6 years the company reached an annual production level of nearly 1,00,000 cars per year. They launched various models like 800, Gypsy, Omni van, Esteem, Zen, Baleno etc.

Meanwhile, quietly but with determination, Japan was developing cars for marketing worldwide, mainly in the USA. Post damage after WW II, many Japanese companies were introduced like Suzuki, Mitsubishi, Toyota, Mazda etc. Some of these like Mazda, were using American Technology.

As a result when there was a oil crisis in 1973, these companies were very well positioned to roll out smaller, compact and economical models in USA.

Now India is now also exporting nearly 12% of manufactured cars to Europe, USA and elsewhere in the world.

3. Classify automobiles based on industry and other parameters.

(i) Purpose of Transportation:

(a) Passenger vehicles: Car, General/Multi purpose Vehicles, Bus.

(b) Goods vehicles: Truck.

(ii) Capacity:

(a) Light motor vehicles: Car, Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs), Multiutility Vehicles (MUVs).

(b) Heavy motor vehicles: Bus, Coach, Tractor, Trucks.

(c) Two Wheelers: Geared Motorcycles, Non-geared Two wheelers, Electric Two wheelers.

(iii) Fuel used:

(a) Petrol vehicles: Car, Motorcycle, Scooter

(b) Diesel vehicles: Truck, Bus, Tractor, Bulldozer

(c) Electric cabs: Battery truck, Forklift, Two wheelers, Cars, Buses

(d) Steam carriages: Steam road rollers (Not in use now)
