Q. 1. What do you understand by the term ‘housekeeping’? Why  is it important?

Ans: Meaning and Importance of Housekeeping: Housekeeping is not just cleanliness. It is the management of household affairs. It includes keeping work areas neat and orderly; maintaining halls and floors free of slip and trip hazards; and removing of waste materials (e.g., paper, cardboard) and other fire hazards from work areas. It also requires paying attention to important details such as the layout of the whole workplace, aisle marking, the adequacy of storage facilities, and maintenance. Good housekeeping is also a basic part of accident and fire prevention.

Q. 2. Identify the maintenance activities required in the kitchen, verandah and lawn of your house.

Ans: Activities required for maintenance of kitchen, verandah and lawn are as under:

1. Kitchen:

(i) Refrigerator: Door seals are airtight. If you have a coil-back refrigerator, vacuum the coils at least twice each year. Your refrigerator will run more efficiently with clean coils. Also, stock up! A full refrigerator uses less energy than an empty one.

(ii) Faucets: Inspect under kitchen sink and bath vanities to see there is no dripping water both in kitchen and bathroom(s). Replace washers as necessary.

Wash kitchen hood grease filters in the dishwasher. Lubricate all locks with a lubricant specifically designed for locks. Clean and disinfect all tile grout with a cleaner that is specifically intended for that purpose.

Windows and Doors: Seal drafty doors and windows. If you added up all of the small cracks where heating and cooling escapes from a home, it would be the same as having a window open. Replace seals as needed. Check that all appliance cords are in good condition.

2. Verandah and Lawn: 

(i) Inspect drainage, flush out drains.

(ii) Lubricate fence gate hinges.

(iii) Inspect the roof to look for slipped, or missing or broken tiles or shingles. 

(iv) Continue with a pest control programme in spring, summer and fall.

(v) Inspect all re-nail loose boards, strap separations at posts. 

(vi) Concrete driveways and walkways should be inspected and any cracks should be filled with a concrete. 

(vii) Trim back tree branches that scrape against or overhang the roof. Keep branches away from chimney to avoid fire hazard and allow proper draft for safe and efficient chimney operation. 

(viii) Check vents and louvers for free air movement. Clean screens and remove bird nests, spiders, insects, and dust.

Lawn: Gardens can be wonderfoul places. They cany also be hard work. Gardening is defined by the seasons. Because of this, the jobs you do in the garden are also determined by the time of year and what the weather is doing. Maintenance practices grass depends upon the variety and purpose for which this grass is chosen.

It is important to determine if you have a high or low maintenance lawn. Shady grass varieties are low maintenance, requiring less fertilising and water. Sunny grass varieties can be high or low maintenance. Lawns that are not highly maintained can use the drought tolerance type of grass. Basic lawn maintenance of your lawn mower is essential to keeping your garden in good shape. Use the fuel and oil recommended by the lawn mower.

Q. 3. Specify five ways each by which a housekeeper in maintaining the bedrooms, corridors, lobby and toilets of a hotel.

Ans: Ways is maintaining the bedrooms, corridors, lobby and toilets:

For Bedrooms: 

1. Remove all room-service items from room.

2. Strip bed(s) of all sheets, blankets and duvets. Place bottom sheet on each bed and tuck 4-8 times. Place top sheets and blanket on each bed and tuck 4-8 times. Spread duvet on bed. Remove 4-8 pillowcases per bed and stuff pillows into fresh cases.

3. Carefully restock and arrange pens, papers and other written materials (i.e. room service menus) on desk.

4. Clean TV screen. Retrieve TV remote and rearrange TV channel guides. 

5. Pick up trash and empty bedroom’s wastebasket.

For Lobby: The reception or foyer areas are normally a high traffic area because it is the main entrance to the building. Because of the large volume of people passing through, a reception area tends to get more soiled and untidy than other areas of the facility.

Setting-up and maintaining complimentary hotel lobby functions includes:

1. The coffee service.

2. Nightly concierge events.

3. Cleaning and setting-up meeting room functions.

4. To delivering service items to guest rooms upon requests from the front desk.

5. Answering questions from the guest.

For Corridor: Housekeeper also known as maids, are the staff members who perform cleaning duties in hotel establishments. Aside from doing laundry and cleaning guest rooms, housekeeper replace: 

(i) light bulbs.

(iv) clean hallways and stairs.

For Toilets: Hotel housekeeping is a difficult and demanding job. The job is a hotel housekeeper is to keep an assigned number of rooms clean. A check-out room must be so neat and clean that the new occupants cannot tell that another family may have vacated the room only a few hours earlier.

The housekeeper will provide fresh clean towels and toiletries and remove the trash. 

The housekeeper will:

(i) wipe down the tub.

(ii) toilet.

(iii) sink and counter.

(iv) towels will be changed and aminities will be refreshed.

In a check-out room, the bathroom is cleaned more thoroughly with a variety of cleaning agents, usually including bleach. Small touches are important here, such as carefully folding the towels.

Ans: (i) Be fresh, well groomed and clean, not half asleep or unkempt in appearance while reporting on duty. 

(ii) Have their hair neatly cut and tied properly.

(iii) Have nails neatly trimmed.

(iv) Dress in simple, clean and well ironed clothes.

(v) Avoid rings or other jewellery. 

(vi) Use light makeup, in case of women. 

(vii) Use footwear that is light, without heels and noiseless.

(viii) Be healthy and not suffer from any skin disease, colds, etc.

(ix) Avoid bad habits such as nail biting, nose leg shaking, sitting on work table, spitting, chewing pan, smoking, etc. 

(x) Bathe daily.
