Ans: According to the passage under “Work Area Responsibilities” (Page 123–124), a lineman performs the following works:
(i) Erects and maintains overhead electric power lines to conduct electricity from the power plant to the place of use.
(ii) Climbs poles and towers, fixes insulators, lightning arresters, cross-braces, and other auxiliary equipment at proper heights.
(iii) Joins cables by various methods, fixes joint-boxes, replaces fuses, and tests for electrical continuity.
(iv) Maintains and repairs defective electricity lines, poles, towers, and auxiliary equipment as per given instructions.
(v) Works on high-tension (H.T.) or low-tension (L.T.) power lines to ensure proper flow of electricity.
2. Write a short note on discharge road.
Ans: A Discharge Rod is an insulated rod (with an extension rod) that has a resistance or corona capsule at its edge connected with an earthing lead. It is used to discharge the static or induction charge from the power line after opening it.
It is an important safety tool that prevents unforeseen dangers or fatal accidents.
Key points:
(i) The line should be treated as charged until properly discharged.
(ii) It safeguards against back-feeding cases, such as accidental generator supply or operator errors.
(iii) The rod should be kept dry, tested for continuity, and cleaned regularly.
(iv) While working, it should be connected to earth first and used with hand gloves to discharge each phase safely.

Ans: First aid is of prime importance in the event of an accident. Everyone should know the basic methods of giving first aid:
(i) Bring the affected person to a peaceful and airy place and ensure he is not suffocated.
(ii) Keep the body straight and lay the person on an even surface.
(iii) In case of a head injury, the head should be kept in an upward position.
(iv) If the person has trouble breathing, keep him in a sitting position.
(v) In epileptic conditions, the head should be kept below the level of the body.
(vi) For wounds, use iodine mixed water to clean and disinfect, apply iodine on the wound, and wrap it with medicated cotton.
(vii) A first aid box should always contain essential items such as cotton pads, iodine, antiseptic, adhesive plaster, spirit, Dettol, bandages, scissors, and safety pins.
