The Summer of the Beautiful White Horse

Chapter: 1

SNAPSHOTS (SUPPLEMENTARY)

1. You will probably agree that this story does not have breathless adventure and exciting action. Then what in your opinion makes it interesting?

Ans: The story does not have breathless adventure and exciting action, but the element that makes it interesting is the smooth flow of psychological narration. The story of the two young Armenian boys is definitely interesting despite the absence of any exciting action or adventure. It is the theme, and development to its subtle climax, that makes it interesting. In this story too the language keeps us in suspense about whom the horse belongs to and gives it a mystical element. Adding trivial daily habits and emotions makes the reader connected with the story and it becomes more relatable. The relationship between the cousin and the author is something we came across in this story. It was interesting to see how their relationship developed over time. Also it was interesting to see how effortlessly Aram and Mourad maintained the two hallmarks, namely trust and honesty of their tribe is proudly known for till the end. The natural and subtle pace with which the story flowed, along with lucid description, and a captivating writing style makes this story engaging and fun for the reader.

2. Did the boys return the horse because they were conscience-stricken or because they were afraid?

Ans: The boys decided to return the horse because they were overcome with guilt. We all have dreams and aspirations to experience something beyond our usual encounters, and for them, riding a horse was one such dream. They were innocent at heart and never intended to harm anyone. John Byro, the farmer, never suspected the boys of stealing his horse. He placed unwavering trust in the integrity of his clan and refused to believe that the children could commit such an act. Instead, he convinced himself that the horse in their possession was merely a lookalike of his own. However, as the boys realized the gravity of their actions, they were filled with remorse. They understood that stealing was a crime.

Children are often taught from a young age that theft is morally wrong. Realizing that they had engaged in such an act would have left them burdened with guilt. Additionally, they may have feared that their actions could tarnish their family’s reputation, leading to severe consequences.

3. “One day back there in the good old days when I was nine and the world was full of every imaginable kind of magnificence, and life was still a delightful and mysterious dream….” The story begins in a mood of nostalgia. Can you narrate some incident from your childhood that might make an interesting story?

Ans: When I was in middle school. I went to the neighbours garden with my two friends. We went back where he planted some green vegetables, fruits, and flowers. He was not in his house so my friends and I picked some fresh apples, and grapes and decided to go back. But my friend refused to come. She asks both of us to pick the rest of the fruits from the grounds and she will climb the apple trees to pluck more apples. It seems very enjoyable so we do as she said. After some time we feel guilty for plucking so many fruits without permission. We sat under the tree and waited for him. He was very angry, we were frightened and said sorry to him, and also gave him all the fruits we had plucked from the tree. He looked at us and then smiled and said don’t do this again without permission. He happily gave all of us some fruit and we thanked him and came back home.

4. The story revolves around characters who belong to a tribe in Armenia. Mourad and Aram are members of the Garoghlanian family. Now locate Armenia and Assyria on the atlas and prepare a write-up on the Garoghlanian tribes, You may write about people, their names, traits, geographical and economic features as suggested in the story.

Ans: The Garoghlanian tribe, as depicted in the story, belonged to Armenia, a country situated in the South Caucasus region of Eurasia. It is bordered by Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Iran. Historically, Assyria was located in the region that now covers parts of Iraq, Syria, Turkey, and Iran. Eleven centuries ago it was the wealthiest tribe in that part of the world. The members of the tribe were famous for their honesty. The Garoghlanians were men of simple faith. They knew the art of living, which is the celebration of being alive. They were proud of their honesty. They believed in right and wrong. None of them could think of deceiving anybody in the world. Even in their struggles, they maintained a dignified and content lifestyle, believing in the richness of their character rather than material wealth.
