Ans: The first Hockey club was formed in Kolkata in 1885, followed by the founding of the Hockey Association in 1886. The International Hockey Federation, which is the global governing body of field hockey, was officially established on January 7, 1924, in Paris. India holds a spectacular record in Olympic Hockey, winning five consecutive Olympic gold medals from 1928 to 1956, and securing gold again in 1964 and 1980 under legendary captains like Jaipal Singh Munda, Dhyan Chand, and Vasudevan Baskaran. A significant shift in the game occurred at the 1976 Montreal Olympics when artificial turf was introduced for the first time, leading to new tactics, techniques, and major rule modifications.

By 1894, Naismith fixed the first 13 rules that still form the basis of the modern game. In the 21st century, shorter limited-over formats like Twenty-20 and the Indian Premier League (IPL) made a massive global impact. The sport was brought to India by the British, and an All-India team toured England in 1911 under the leadership of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh. India officially entered the international arena by playing its first Test against England in 1932. Legendary early players like Prince Ranjit Singh of Nawanagar left a lasting legacy, which is commemorated today by the National Cricket Championship known as the Ranji Trophy.
