Understanding Our Body
Chapter: 5
| Unit – 2 Science and Sports |
Activity:
1. Why do you think the calf muscles tendon which is inserted into the calcaneus is called Achilles tendon?
After your teacher narrates the story behind this name, discuss the values you learned from it, and identify a similar story from the Indian epic Mahābhārata.
Ans: It is named after the Greek hero Achilles. According to the story, Achilles was very powerful, but his heel was his weak point. Since this tendon is attached to the heel, it was named the Achilles tendon. The story teaches us that everyone has strengths and weaknesses and that we should remain humble. A similar story from the Mahabharata is that of Duryodhana, whose thighs were his vulnerable part.
2. With the pinch grip, try to hold and feel the texture of your Achilles Tendon below the calf muscle and above the heel bone, as shown in Fig. 5.4 Is it similar to what you feel when you touch your ear? Discuss the similarities and differences with your peers.
Ans: No, they do not feel the same. The Achilles tendon feels hard, strong, and rope-like because it is made of tough connective tissue. The outer ear feels soft and flexible because it is mainly made of cartilage. Both are body structures that can be felt by touch, but their texture and functions are different.
| EXERCISES |
1. In the Preparatory and Middle Stages, you practised different physical activities, including warm-up and cool-down exercises. List five activities that help improve the mobility and function of specific joints.
Ans: Five activities that help improve joint mobility and function are:
(i) Wrist rotation (improves mobility in the wrist).
(ii) Knee bends (engages the knee joint).
(iii) Toe raises (engages the ankle joint).
(iv) Arm swings (improves function in the shoulder joint).
(v) Gentle dynamic stretches (allow joints to move more easily and safely by reducing friction).
2. Perform heel raises in both a standing position and a mid-squat position. Try to feel the difference in tension in your calf muscles and identify the muscles involved.
Ans: The primary muscles involved in heel raises are the calf muscles, specifically the gastrocnemius and the soleus. You feel tension because these muscles contract to lift your body weight, pulling on the heel bone (calcaneus) via the Achilles tendon.
3. Observe the movements while kicking and throwing a ball. Identify and list the joints and muscles that contribute to each movement.
Ans: (i) Kicking a ball: The joints involved include the hip joint, knee joint, and ankle joint. The muscles contributing to this movement include the gluteus maximus, hamstring group, quadriceps group, gastrocnemius, and soleus.
(ii) Throwing a ball: The joints involved include the shoulder joint and elbow joint. The primary muscles contributing include the deltoids, pectoralis major, biceps, and triceps.
