1. Explain how biological development, motor skills, and behavioural development help you, giving one example of each.
Ans: Based on the text, development is a qualitative change that includes multiple aspects:
(i) Biological Development: It helps in the progression of the body towards adulthood and overall functional readiness.
Example: Achieving reproductive maturity or the completion of bone growth.
(ii) Motor Skills Development: It helps in improving physical coordination and acquiring new abilities.
Example: Learning to walk, read, or play sports.
(iii) Behavioural Development: It helps in shaping how you act, interact, and manage yourself in different situations.
Example: Learning teamwork or controlling emotions during sports.
2. How are heredity and environment responsible for growth?
Ans: Both factors play a distinct role in an individual’s growth:
(i) Heredity (Genetics): Heredity sets the baseline for your physical traits. It determines your height, body size, and skeletal proportions. It also regulates the timing of system-specific maturation and the onset of puberty.
(ii) Environment: The environment can either support or hinder your growth potential. Safe surroundings encourage exploration and learning, whereas poor conditions, pollution, or toxins may restrict body growth and disrupt or delay the maturation processes.
3. Two students of the same age have different heights. Explain the difference in terms of growth and maturation.
Ans: This difference can be explained by understanding how growth and maturation work differently for every individual:
(i) Growth is the measurable, quantitative change in body size, height, and weight. The rate of cellular multiplication and tissue increase varies from person to person.
(ii) Maturation is the body’s progression towards adulthood, which happens at different ages, rates, and times for almost all individuals. Because maturation sets the pace for growth and development, one student might reach certain biological markers (like skeletal maturity or puberty) earlier or later than the other student. Therefore, even at the exact same age, their heights can be completely different.
