I. Based on the following points write a story.
(i) Your aunt has gone to her mother’s house.
(ii) Your uncle does his cooking.
(iii) He is absent-minded.
(iv) He puts vegetables on the stove.
(v) He begins to clean his bicycle outside.
(vi) The neighbour calls out saying something is burning.
(vii) Your uncle rushes to the kitchen.
(viii) To save vegetables, he puts some oil on them.
(ix) Unfortunately, it’s machine oil, not cooking oil.
(x) What do you think happens to the vegetables?
Begin like this:
Last month my aunt decided to visit her parents…
Ans: Last month, my aunt went to visit her parents, leaving my absent-minded uncle in charge of the house. Determined to handle everything by himself, he decided to prepare his own meals.
One afternoon, he chopped some vegetables and placed them on the stove to cook. However, being forgetful, he soon got distracted by his bicycle, which needed cleaning. He stepped outside and started scrubbing it, completely losing track of the vegetables on the stove.
A few minutes later, our neighbour shouted, “Something is burning!” Startled, my uncle rushed back to the kitchen, only to find thick black smoke billowing from the pan. In a state of panic, he grabbed the nearest bottle and poured oil over the burning vegetables, thinking it would save them.
To his shock, he realized too late that he had used machine oil instead of cooking oil! The vegetables were completely ruined, and the entire kitchen was filled with a terrible smell. When my aunt returned, she burst into laughter at the disaster he had created. From that day onwards, my uncle swore never to cook alone again!
Trees
WORKING WITH THE POEM |
1. What are the games or human activities which use trees, or in which trees also ‘participate’?
Ans: The games or human activities which use trees or in which trees also participate are the following:
Trees are used by children to hide while playing hide and seek. Children make tree houses to play in, Adults have their tea parties under the shade of the trees in summer, Adults also use them as a scene to paint.
2. (i) “Trees are to make no shade in winter.” What does this mean? (Contrast this line with the line immediately before it.)
Ans: This line indicates that During winter time, we need sunlight to protect us from the cold winds and we do not need the cool shades of trees as it is already cold. Whereas in summers, we need to protect ourselves from bright and glaring sun rays and trees provide us with cool shade.
(ii) “Trees are for apples to grow on, or pears.” Do you agree that one purpose of a tree is to have fruit on it? Or do you think this line is humorous?
Ans: Yes, one purpose of trees is to have fruits on it be it apples or pears. This line is not humorous but absolutely appropriate as apple and pears are the most common fruit so the poet used these two fruit names.
3. With the help of your partner, try to rewrite some lines in the poem, or add new ones of your own as in the following examples.
Trees are for birds to build nests in.
Trees are for people to sit under.
Now try to compose a similar poem about water, or air.
Ans: Water is for us to drink.
Water is for boats to sail on.
Water is for kids to splash in.
Water is for life to thrive.
