Answer the following questions:

1. Why was the king advised to go to magicians?

Ans: The king was advised to go to the magicians so that they could look into the future and tell the upcoming events to the king and then he could decide the course of his action.

2. In answer to the second question, whose advice did the people say would be important to the king?

Ans: In answer to the second question, some people said that the advice of councillors was important, some said the advice of the priest was important, some others said doctors and soldiers are important to the king.

3. What suggestions were made in answer to the third question?

Ans: In answer to the third question some said science. Others chose fighting, and yet others religious worship.

4. Did the wise men win the reward? If not, why not?

Ans: No, the wise men didn’t win the reward because the king was not satisfied with anyone’s answer. 

5. How did the king and the hermit help the wounded man?

Ans: The king and the hermit gave the wounded man shelter and protected him from the army. The king washed and covered the wound with his handkerchief. The king re-dressed the wound until the bleeding stopped completely. They gave him fresh water to drink. Then they both carried the man in the hut and laid him on the bed.

6. (i) Who was the bearded man? 

Ans: The bearded man was the King’s enemy who swore revenge on him. 

(ii) Why did he ask for the king’s forgiveness?

Ans: He asked for the king’s forgiveness because the king saved his life. He had come there to take revenge on the king, but instead, the king helped him recover.

7. The king forgave the bearded man. What did he do to show his forgiveness?

Ans: The king forgave the bearded man and showed his forgiveness by offering to send a doctor and servants to take care of him. He also promised to return his property.

8. What were the hermit’s answers to the three questions? Write each answer separately. Which answer do you like most, and why?

Ans: In answer to the king’s first question, the hermit said that the most important time is “Now” because it is the only time when we have the power to act.

For the second question, the hermit said that the most important person is the one with whom we are at the present moment.

In response to the third question, the hermit answered that the most important thing to do is to do good for that person.

I liked the first answer the most because time is supreme. One should live in the present and act accordingly.

1. Imagine you are the king. Narrate the incident of your meeting the hermit. Begin like this:

The wise men answered my questions, but I was not satisfied with their answers. One day I decided to go and meet the hermit…

Ans: The wise men answered my questions, but I was not satisfied with their answers. One day, I decided to go and meet the hermit, who was known for his great wisdom. I left behind my guards and royal attire, dressed in simple clothes, and traveled alone to the hermit’s dwelling in the forest.

When I arrived, I saw the old hermit digging the ground with a spade. He was weak and frail, yet he continued his labor with great effort. I approached him and said, “O wise hermit, I have come seeking answers to my questions.” But he did not reply. He continued digging, breathing heavily.

I worked for hours, yet he remained silent. Just as I was about to repeat my questions, a wounded man stumbled toward us. He was bleeding heavily. Without hesitation, I helped the hermit dress the man’s wounds and carried him to his hut.

2. Imagine you are the hermit. Write briefly the incident of your meeting the king. Begin like this:

One day I was digging in my garden. A man in ordinary clothes came to see me. I knew it was the king…

Ans: One day, as I was digging in my garden, a man in simple clothes arrived. I recognized him as the king, but I chose to remain silent and continued my work. He asked me his questions, but instead of responding, I kept digging, knowing that he needed to discover the answers through experience rather than words.

Noticing my fatigue after some time, the king took the spade from me and began digging. I allowed him to continue, for I knew that his actions would lead him to wisdom. Hours passed, and suddenly, a wounded man stumbled toward us, bleeding profusely. Without hesitation, the king rushed to his aid, helping me dress his wounds and care for him.

The Squirrel

1. Why does the poet say the squirrel “wore a question mark for tail”? Draw a squirrel, or find a picture of a squirrel sitting on the ground. How would you describe its tail?

Ans: 

The poet says that the squirrel “wore a question mark for its tail” because its bushy tail curls up over its back, resembling the shape of a question mark.

2. Do we usually say that an animal ‘wears’ a tail? What do we say? (Think: Does an animal wear a coat? Consult a dictionary if you like, and find out how ‘wear’ is used in different ways.)

Ans: We usually say that an animal has certain characteristics or features rather than using the word wear. However, the poet uses wear to describe the squirrel’s external appearance. According to the dictionary, wear typically refers to an outer covering, such as clothing.

3. “He liked to tease and play”. Who is teasing whom? How?

Ans: The squirrel is teasing the poet. Whenever the poet went a little close to the squirrel, it ran away in the opposite direction, as if playing a game.
