AUXILIARY VERBS AND THEIR CONTRACTION

GRAMMAR

Some auxiliary verbs such as have, could, will, would, are, etc. can also be written in short or contracted form in formal writing.

See the following examples:

(i) She could not reach the station in time. She couldn’t reach the station in time.

(ii) I will go to the theatre today.

I’ll go to the theatre today.

Rewrite the following sentences using the contracted forms of auxiliaries :

(i) Today is not a holiday.

Ans: Today isn’t a holiday.

(ii) He will certainly come.

Ans: He’ll certainly come.

(iii) I do not know anything about it.

Ans: I don’t know anything about it.

(iv) You need not go there.

Ans: You needn’t go there.

(v) She has not done her home work.

Ans: She hasn’t done her homework.

(vi) John is not playing today.

Ans: John isn’t playing today.

(vii) This ought not be done.

Ans: This oughtn’t be done.

(viii) We are not going for a picnic today.

Ans: We aren’t going for a picnic today.

(ix) She does not know the address.

Ans: She doesn’t know the address.

(x) I have not paid the sum yet.

Ans: I haven’t paid the sum yet.

(xi) I cannot take this any more.

Ans: I can’t take this any more.

(xii) We have been to the zoo.

Ans: We’ve been to the zoo.

(xii) It is such a lovely morning.

Ans: It’s such a lovely morning.

(xiv) The boys are not attentive today.

Ans: The boys aren’t attentive today.

(xv) She will preside over the meeting. 

Ans: She’ll preside over the meeting.

(xvi) Do not go there.

Ans: Don’t go there.

(xvii) He does not approve of our decision. 

Ans: He doesn’t approve of our decision.

(xviii) I will not come today.

Ans: i will not come today.

(xix) She is not a good dancer. 

Ans: She isn’t a good dancer.

(xx) You have been so kind to me.
Ans: You’ve been so kind to me.
