AUXILIARY VERBS AND THEIR CONTRACTION

GRAMMAR

Some auxiliary verbs such as have, could, will, would, are, etc. can also be written in short or contracted form in formal writing.

See the following examples:

(i) She could not reach the station in time. She couldn’t reach the station in time.

(ii) I will go to the theatre today.

I’ll go to the theatre today.

(i) Today is not a holiday.

(ii) He will certainly come.

Ans: I don’t know anything about it.

(iv) You need not go there.

Ans: You needn’t go there.

(v) She has not done her home work.

Ans: She hasn’t done her homework.

(vi) John is not playing today.

Ans: John isn’t playing today.

(vii) This ought not be done.

Ans: This oughtn’t be done.

(viii) We are not going for a picnic today.

Ans: We aren’t going for a picnic today.

(ix) She does not know the address.

Ans: She doesn’t know the address.

(x) I have not paid the sum yet.

Ans: I haven’t paid the sum yet.

(xi) I cannot take this any more.

(xii) It is such a lovely morning.
