Answer the Following Question:

1. Define memory and explain its basic meaning.

Ans: Memory is a mental process that helps a person store past experiences and recall them when required. It is not considered a special power but a complex mental function involving learning, storing, recalling, and recognizing past experiences.

2. What are the four stages involved in the process of memory?

Ans: The four stages involved in the memory process are:

(i) Learning or acquisition of experience.

(ii) Retention or storing the acquired knowledge.

(iii) Recall or remembering stored information.

(iv) Recognition of the correctness of recalled information.

3. Explain the importance of retention in memory.

Ans: Retention is the stage where acquired experiences are stored in the mind. Without retention, memory cannot function. Retentive capacity is inherited and helps store learning for future recall. It develops up to the age of 14–15 years and reaches its peak around 25 years.

4. What is recall or remembering?

Ans: Recall is the process of bringing stored experiences back into the conscious mind. It is considered an unchanged reproduction of past experiences. Effective recall depends on good retention and regular repetition of learning.

5. Describe the role of recognition in memory.

Ans: Recognition is the process of verifying the correctness of recalled information. It helps a person mentally confirm that the remembered information is correct. Recognition usually happens during answering objective-type questions.

6. List and explain two characteristics of memory.

Ans: (i) Need of Sensory Experience: Memory formation begins with sensory input, as experiences are gathered through sense organs.

(ii) Role of Unconscious Mind: The unconscious mind influences memory by helping retain pleasant memories and forget unpleasant ones.

7. Explain the concept of image memory and habit memory.

Ans: Image Memory is based on mental images formed by past experiences. It requires intelligence and creativity.

Habit Memory is formed through repeated physical actions and depends more on physical repetition than mental images.

8. What do you understand by short-term and long-term memory?

Ans: Short-Term Memory is where information is recalled immediately after learning, lasting for a short period.

Long-Term Memory is the ability to remember things after a long gap, sometimes even years after the experience.

9. Define logical memory and rote memory.

Ans: Logical Memory involves learning through understanding and reasoning.
Rote Memory is based on mechanical repetition without understanding the material, often temporary in nature.

10. What is sensory memory? Give an example.

Ans: Sensory memory is derived from experiences acquired through sense organs. For example, remembering the sound of a bell (auditory memory) or recalling an image seen earlier (visual memory).

11. Explain associative memory with an example.

Ans: Associative memory works through association. For example, seeing black color may remind us of white due to contrast. Memory is recalled by connecting new experiences with old ones.

12. List any two marks of good memory.
