11. Explain the role of the hypothalamus in the endocrine system.
Ans: The hypothalamus is a key region in the brain that plays a vital role in regulating the endocrine system.
(i) It is located below the thalamus and connects to the pituitary gland.
(ii) The hypothalamus produces releasing hormones (e.g., GnRH, TRH) and inhibiting hormones (e.g., somatostatin) that control the release of hormones from the pituitary gland.
(iii) It regulates body temperature, hunger, thirst, and sleep-wake cycles.
(iv) It also controls the autonomic nervous system and helps in the control of the pituitary gland, making it a critical component in hormone regulation.
12. What is the cause and features of acromegaly?
Ans. Acromegaly is caused by excess of GH in adults and shows large disproportionate body.
13. What is the role of second messenger in hormone action?
Ans. The hormones that do not enter target cell, interact with specific receptors found on surface of target cell membranes as well as generates second messengers like CAMP on inner side of plasma membrane. This second messenger, then carries out all hormonal functions.
14. Name the gland that secretes vasopressin. What are its principal functions?
Ans. It is secreted by posterior part of the pituitary gland (formerly called hypophysis).
Function: Osmoregulation, water reabsorption of blood vessel, rise in blood pressure.
15. What is the function of Leydig’s cells?
Ans. Leydig cells (interstitial cells) of the testes secrete testosterone hormone that stimulates development of external male sex characters such as beards, moustaches and low pitch voice in man and stimulates the formation of sperms in testis.
