1. What is synaptic cleft?

Ans. Synapse is formed by the membranes of a pre-synaptic neuron and a post-synaptic neuron, which may or may not be separated by a gap called synaptic cleft.

2. Name the visible colored portion of our eyes.

Ans. Iris.

3. Why is blind spot devoid of vision?

Ans. Because there is no photoreceptor cell.

4. Define reflex action.

Ans. The entire process of involuntary response to a peripheral nervous stimulation is called a reflex action.

5. What are neurons?

Ans. Neuron is structural and functional unit of neural system.

6. What are the two divisions of Autonomic neural system?

Ans. Autonomic neural system is classified into sympathetic neural system and parasympathetic neural system.

7. Why are neurons excitable?

Ans. Neurons are excitable cells because their membranes are in a polarised state.

8. Name the part of ear that functions to maintain body balance.

Ans. Crista and macula are specific receptors of vestibular apparatus responsible for maintenance of balance and posture of the body.

9. What are the neurotransmitters?

Ans. These are the chemicals which help to transmit nerve impulses across the synapse e.g. acetylcholine and norepinephrine.

10. State the function of cerebellum.

Ans. It modulates and moderates voluntary movements initiated by the cerebral cortex.

11. What is the pathway of a reflex action?

Ans. Stimulus → receptor organ → sensory nerves → spinal cord→ motor nerves → muscle action.

12. What is the basic unit of neural or nervous system?

Ans. Neuron.

13. What are neurotransmitters with examples?

Ans. Chemicals called neurotransmitters are involved in the transmission of impulses at the synapses. Two main neurotransmitters acetylcholine and nor adrenaline. 

14. Describe the types of neurons with their location in human body.

Ans. Types of neurons:

(i) Multipolar: have one axon and two or more dendrites. Found in the cerebral cortex and spinal cord.

(ii) Bipolar: have one axon and one dendrite. Bipolar neurons are found in retina of eyes, olfactory epithelium, cochlear and vestibular ganglia.

(iii) Unipolar: cell body with one axon only. Found usually in the embryonic stage of invertebrates and vertebrates.

(iv) Non polar neurons: each neuron has several branched processes (projections). These neurons occur in cnidarians (coelenterates).

(v) Pseudounipolar neurons: A single process arises from the cyton and then divides into axon and dendrite. They are found in dorsal root ganglia of spinal nerves. 

15. Where are ceruminous glands present? What is their functional signi ficance ?

Ans. Ceruminous Glands: These glands are present in external auditory meatus.

Their functional significance :

(a) Function as flypaper traps for the insects and dust etc.

(b) They secrete wax which provides protection against infections.
