Jahnu Barua was born on October 18, 1952, in Bakta, Sivasagar district of Assam. His father’s name is Deveshwar Barua and mother’s name is Gunavati Barua. Jahnu Barua has seven brothers and three sisters. He studied at science stream from B. Borooah College Guwahati and also done his graduation from their as well.

Jahnu Barua who is one of the most popular Assamese film director has bees conferred with Padma Shri (2003) and Padma Bhushan (2015) Awards by the government of India.
