1. What is the water storage capacity of the water tank in your locality? 

Ans: The water tank in my locality has an approximate storage capacity of around 1,00,000 litres (1 lakh litres), which is enough to supply the daily requirement of the surrounding houses.

2. How much water is supplied daily to your locality? (You can get this information from the local municipal corporation, Gram Panchayat office or water supply authority.)

Ans: According to the local water supply authority, about 80,000 to 1,00,000 litres of water is supplied daily to our locality to meet the needs of all households.

3. How many people use this water? (You need to know the population of the locality; you can get this information from the local municipal corporation, Gram Panchayat office or water supply authority.)

Ans: As per the information from the local municipal/Gram Panchayat office, nearly 450–500 people in our locality depend on this daily water supply, which includes all the households connected to the community water tank and pipeline network.

1. What is the source of water for our locality? 

Ans: The main source of water in our locality is municipal pipeline, borewell and sometimes water from a nearby river or reservoir. Rainwater also helps recharge the groundwater and fill the tanks, ensuring water supply throughout the year.

2. How much water does each household receive per day? What is the amount of water allotted per day per person? 

Ans: Each household receives around 500 – 1000 litres of water per day, and the amount of water allotted per person is about 100 – 135 litres per day in urban areas or about 55 litres per day in rural areas, as per Jal Jeevan Mission standards. Actual household and per-person consumption varies significantly based on location, income, lifestyle, and available infrastructure. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends 50-100 liters per person per day to meet all daily needs and maintain good health.

3. Do you face any challenge in supplying sufficient water to all? What are those challenges?

Ans: Yes, there are challenges in providing adequate water to everyone, such as low water pressure that prevents water from reaching higher floors, falling water levels during summer and dry seasons, water wastage due to leakages and seepage in pipelines, rising water demand due to a growing population, and borewells drying up quickly due to over-reliance on groundwater.

4. How does rainwater contribute to water availability in your area? What efforts have been made to store rainwater for later use? 

Ans: In our region, rainwater contributes significantly to water availability by recharging the groundwater table and filling tanks and reservoirs. To store rainwater for later use, arrangements have been made such as rainwater harvesting, soak pits, percolation tanks and collecting water from the roofs of houses and schools, so that rainwater can be preserved for a long time and used when needed.

5. Are there any seasonal changes in water availability in the locality? 

Ans: Yes, there is seasonal variation in water availability in our area. During summer and dry seasons, water supply decreases due to falling groundwater levels, while during the rainy season, water sources fill up due to rainfall and water availability increases.

6. Any suggestions for water management by individuals? 

Ans: Tips for water management by individuals include preventing water leakage in the house, using water only as per requirement, keeping taps closed during activities like bathing and brushing teeth, not wasting water in drains, harvesting rainwater, reusing water used for watering plants, and installing water saving devices like low flow taps and toilets.

(i) Fix leakages immediately: Repair leaking taps, pipes or overflowing tanks in time.

(ii) Use water judiciously: Open taps partially, install flow-caps or aerators, limit time spent bathing, use buckets.

(iii) Reuse water: Use water used for washing vegetables and fruits to water plants.

(iv) Harvest rainwater: Recharge groundwater by collecting rooftop rainwater in tanks or underground pits (percolation tanks).

7. Create a simple neighborhood map showing water sources, like wells, tanks, or water delivery points. Ask the official for help if needed.

Ans: Based on a sample survey of five families, the calculation is as follows:

Total number of family members: 22

Total daily water consumption: 4,250 litres To find the average daily consumption per person, we use the formula Average = Total consumption ÷ Total members So, 4,250 litres ÷ 22 people ≈ 193 litres per person per day.
