Ans: Three examples of The bear grew up but “he was a most amiable bear”.

(i) The bear was harmless.

(ii) The children used to ride on his back safely.

(iii) The three dogs loved to play various games with him.

3. What did the bear eat? There were two things he was not allowed to do. What were they?

Ans: The bear ate the same food as the dogs. He was given bread, porridge, potatoes, cabbages and turnips. He was a vegetarian. He liked the apple most.

He was not allowed to pluck apples from the tree and attack the beehive.

4. When was the bear tied up with a chain? Why?

Ans: The bear was usually tied up with a chain only at night and on Sundays when his mistress visited her married sister. This was done to prevent him from wandering into the forest, where he might be tempted by its attractions and face danger.

5. What happened one Sunday when the lady was going to her sister’s house? What did the lady do? What was the bear’s reaction?

Ans: One Sunday while the lady was on way to her sister’s house, she heard the cracking of the branches behind her. She thought that it was her bear, so she started scolding him and told him to go back. She didn’t want him to accompany her. She got very angry when she saw that the bear had lost its new collar and hit him on his nose with her sun umbrella. The bear opened his mouth several times and gave a look to her as if it wanted to say something and looked at her with his shrewd eyes. After that, it turned around and went away.

6. Why was the bear looking sorry for himself in the evening? Why did the cook get angry with her mistress?

Ans: The bear was looking sorry for himself in the evening because he was in chains the whole Sunday afternoon. He was looking for his mistress and thinking why he had been chained without doing anything. The cook got angry with her mistress because she had scolded the bear for no mistake. He had been sitting there quiet and still on his haunches like a timid angel, looking at the gate for the mistress to come back.

Discuss the following topics in groups.

1. Most people keep dogs and cats as pets. Can you think of some unusual pets that people keep?

Ans: The unusual pets that people often keep are Hedgehogs, Chameleons, Snakes,  even crocodiles.

2. The second bear did not attack the lady because he was afraid of her. Do you agree?

Ans: The second bear did not attack the lady because he too was a friendly bear. He was charging towards her and it seemed as if he wanted to sit near her heels. The lady reprimanded him and even smacked him with her parasol, believing he was her pet bear. The bear did not retaliate furiously, but instead slowly turned around and walked away, possibly upset at being yelled at.
