Answer in brief:

Q. 1. If you had lived in the Roman Empire,where would you rather have lived — in the towns or in the countryside? Explain. Why?

Ans. Being a citizen of  the Roman Empire. I would like to live in a town, on account of following facts:

(i) Availability of better facilities as compared to the countryside.

(ii) During the time of famine, town people would not suffer food scarcity.

(iii) No shortage of food and other eatables in towns.

Q. 2. Compile a list of some of the towns, cities, rivers, seas and provinces mentioned in this chapter and then find them on the maps. Can you say something about any three of the items in the list you have compiled?

Ans. Activity based question. For the help of the student a few guidelines are given below:

(i) Look at map given below.

(ii) Make the list of important cities, rivers, and provinces of the Roman Empire.

(iii) Write a few words about the city of Rome River Nile or Rhine and Mediterranean sea.

Q. 3. Imagine that you are a Roman housewife preparing a shopping list for household requirements. What would be on the list?

Ans. Being a Roman housewife, I would like to include bread, butter, milk, eggs, meat, spices, oil, pulse, etc., while preparing a list of household requirements.

Q. 4. Why do you think the Roman government stopped coining in silver? And which metal did it begin to use for the production of coinage?

Ans. Roman government stopped coining in silver and begun to use gold for coinage because silver was limited and the mines of silver were exhausted due to over excavation.

Q. 5. Suppose the emperor Trajan had actually managed to conquer India and the Romans had held to the country for several centuries. In what ways do you think India might be different today?

Ans. If Roman emperor Trajan had actually managed to conquer India, India would be different today on following aspects:

(i) Absence of democratic ideas.

(ii) Absence of democratic government.

(iii) Slavery system may have prevailed in the Indian society.

(iv) Indian society may be divided into three social groups: Patrician, Plebians and the Slaves.

(v) Architecture still would have certainly different.

Q. 6. Go through the chapter carefully and pick out some basic features of Roman society and economy which you think make it look quite modern?

Ans. Society: People of Roman society made an effective use of law for their protection. Religious diversity also existed there and people worshipped many cults and local deities.
Economy: Both trade and agriculture were prosperous and the level of productivity was very high. Commercial system was also prevalent.
