Q.1. What does the author notice one Sunday afternoon? What is his mother’s reaction? What does she do? Or What happened one Sunday afternoon? What did the author Zan Gaudioso do?
Ans. One afternoon the author was reading in the dining room and his mother was stoking the fire to keep the house warm and comfortable. Then the author noticed smoke pouring in through the seams of the celling. The smoke began to fill the room so quickly that they could barely see. Gropping their way to the front door they all ran out into the front yard. By the time they came out of the house the whole roof was engulfed in flames and the fire was spreading quickly.
The author’s mother reacted so fast that at once she ran back into the house. Then she ran out of the house carrying a small metal box full of important documents. She dropped the case on the lawn. Then in a crazed state she ran back into the house to bring out her husband’s pictures and letters. They were the only things that she had as his memoirs. The author screamed and wanted to follow her. A fire man prevented him. After a while his mother was brought out by a fireman.
Q.2. Why does he break down in tears after the fire?
Ans. The author sad dazed beside his mother who had inhaled some smoke and had to be given an oxygen mask. Five hours after the house had caught fire, the fire was finally put out. The house was completely burnt down. Then he remembered his cat. He had not seen his cat. He thought where she might be. He was horrified when he could not find her anywhere. Then all at once he remembered his school, the fire and his cat. The rememberance of all these things together made him to break down in tears and he went on crying. Then he could feel the amount of his loss that was really big.
Q.3. Why is the author deeply embarrassed the next day at school? Which words show his fear and insecurity?
Ans. The next day, Monday the author went to school wearing the same dress that he had put on to go to the church on Sunday. His shoes had been burnt. So, he borrowed some tenis shoes from his aunt. He did not want to go, but his mother would not hear of that. He went wearing the clothes that looked weird. He had no books, no home work and his back pack was not there. He had lost the valuable things kept in the back pack. He felt as if he were born to be an outcast. He wanted to curl up and die.

“Was I destained to be an outcast and a geek all my life. That is what I felt like. I did not want to grow up, change or have to handle life if it was going to be this way. I just wanted to curl up and die.”

Ans. The cat and the author were very close to each other. The author had rescued it, when it was a kitten. Since then the cat somehow knew that the author had given her life. She remained close to him. On the day the fire broke out she was lying on the top of the papers when the author was doing his homework. She purred loudly occasionally swatting at his pen for the sake of entertainment. Every day the cat remained his close companion playing with him till he fell asleep.
After the fire the author did not see the cat. He broke down thinking about her. It was away from home. She had been so frightened by the fire that it went away about a mile. A woman kept her kindly. She realised that the cat must be a pet one. One day she brought the cat back to the author. She was seen carrying it in her lap. She gave it back to the author.
Q.5. What actions of the schoolmates changed the author’s understanding of life and people, and comfort him emotionally. How does his lonliness vanish and how does he start participating in life?

Ans. The author practically broke down after he lost everything in the fire. He was so nervous that he wanted to curl up and die. Then his schoomates came forward to help him. They had collected funds and bought all his essential things. They forced him to the gym. On a table was a heap of things. They bought him school supplies, note books and all kinds of clothes etc. Even strangers came forward, talked to him and invited him to go to their homes.
Such kind behaviour and co-operation of the schoolmates vanished the author’s feeling of lonliness and encouraged and inspired him to participate in life again. It help him to overcome the tragedy in his life.
