Early Life of Sarbananda Sonowal

On October 31, 1962, Sarbananda Sonowal was born in a Sonowal Kachari family in Muluk Gaon of Dibrugarh district. His father’s name is late Jibeswar Sonowal and his mother’s name is Dineswari Sonowal. He was the younger son of the house and had six brothers and two sisters.

Sarbananda Sonowal completed his primary education from Muluk Gaon Primary School in Dibrugarh and studied till Class VI at Bindhakata Middle English School. He then completed his schooling from Dibrugarh Don Bosco School. Sarbananda Sonowal passed his graduation in arts from Dibrugarh Hanumanbox Surajmal Kanoi College. He then received his master’s degree in English at Dibrugarh University. In addition, Sonowal received his law degree from Guwahati University as well as a degree in Journalism and Mass-communication. Political Career of Sarbananda Sonowal

Sarbananda Sonowal from his college days had associated himself with the welfare of the society. Respected Sarbananda Sonowal, who is the former Chief Minister of Assam, once fought for the betterment of the people and his state Assam as a member of the All-Assam Students’ Association. He decorated the post of president of All Assam Students Union from 1992 to 1999. He held the post of Chairman of the North East Students’ Association (Northeast Student Union) from 1994 to 2004.

Sarbananda Sonowal joined the Asom Gana Parishad party in 1999 and entered direct politics. Sonowal was elected MLA from Moran assembly constituency in 2001. He then defeated Congress candidate Paban Singh Ghatowar from Dibrugarh Lok Sabha constituency in 2004 and entered the post of MP for the first time. Sonowal fought against the controversial IMDT Act in court and was able to repeal the law.

Sonowal served as a member of parliament from Dibrugarh constituency from 2004 to 2009. He lost Lok Sabha election from Dibrugarh in 2009. On February 8, 2011, Sarbananda Sonowal joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (B.J.P). He was then elected as member of parliament of the State Bharatiya Janata Party in 2012 and is also a member of the party’s National Executive. In 2014 general election for Lok Sabha he was appointed to head Assam State’s Lok Sabha by BJP, and in the same year he was also elected as Member of Parliament, 16th Lok Sabha, from Lakhimpur Constituency. In a year he held the post of independent Union Minister of State-Independent Charge, of the Government of India under the Modi Government at the center. Sonowal was credited with organizing Games and other National International Activities and Festivals in Assam while he was in charge of the Department of Youth Welfare and Action.

In the 2016 Vidhan sabha elections, Majuli contested the Assembly Constituency Elections and defeated rival Rajib Lochan Pegu to take over as chief minister of the state by winning by a margin of 18923 votes. The Bharatiya Janata Party (B.J.P) led by Sarbananda Sonowal achieved unprecedented results in Assam. It may be recalled that the 15th person who won the seat of Chief Minister of Assam is the Hon’ble Sarbananda Sonowal. He became Chief Minister of Assam, the first CM of the state from Bharatiya Janata Party. In 2021 he was re-elected to Assam Vidhan Sabha from Majuli. He resigned as Chief Minister and proposed Himanta Biswa Sharma’s name as his successor. He became minister of ports, Shipping and Waterways and Minister of AYUSH in Second Modi ministry when cabinet overhaul happened.
