Ans: Yes, Kari loved to be taken to the river for his bath. He lay down on the sandbank. The narrator rubbed his body with clean sand. Then he washed his body with water. He used to make sounds joyfully.

3. Finding good twigs for Kari took a long time. Why?

Ans: Finding twigs and saplings for Kari was a difficult task. His friend had to climb various trees to gather the finest and most tender twigs. Kari particularly loved the young branches of the banyan tree, which spread out like a cathedral of leaves and branches. A sharp hatchet was essential to cut these twigs, and it took half an hour to sharpen it, as any damage to the twig would make it unacceptable to an elephant.

4. Why did Kari push his friend into the stream?

Ans: Kari pushed his friend into the stream because he wanted to save a drowning boy. Initially, the narrator thought Kari was being playful, but later, he realized that Kari was urging him to rescue someone in distress.

5. Kari was like a baby. What are the main points of comparison?

Ans: There are many factors which show that Kari was a baby. These factors are that Kari needed to be trained to be good, just like we do with a baby. He needed to be told when to sit or stand or walk at what pace at what time. Kari also needed to be scolded in order to not be naughty otherwise he would not stop and be more mischievous.

6. Kari helped himself to all the bananas in the house without anyone noticing it. How did he do it?

Ans: Kari stole the bananas from the table near the window in the dining room. He put his trunk through the window like a snake and disappeared with all the bananas without anyone noticing it.

7. Kari learnt the commands to sit and to walk. What were the instructions for each command?

Ans: Kari learnt the commands to sit down or stand up and walk fast or slow. The word “Dhat” was the command to sit down. The word ‘Mali’ was the command to walk.

8. What is “the master call”? Why is it the most important signal for an elephant to learn?

Ans: The master-call was a strange kind of hissing like a snake and howling like a tiger. It is an important signal for an elephant because whenever the master was in trouble, one master call would bring the elephant near him and help him out of danger.
