Activity – 1: What Makes Stories Work? |
1. Who told the story?
Ans: My grandmother told the story.
2. How did they tell the story? Did they recite it, or keep changing their voice? Did they use any props, modulate their voice, use actions and change expressions as they told the story?
Ans: She didn’t just recite it; she changed her voice for different characters, used her hands to show actions, and made funny faces to match the emotions in the story.
3. What did you like about the way they told the story?
Ans: I liked how she made the characters come alive by using different voices and expressions. It made the story exciting and fun, and I always wanted to hear it again.
The most important thing for a story is holding the listeners’ attention. Discuss your responses with your peers and see if you identified some common elements that made storytelling interesting.
On the basis of this discussion, what would you do to make a story exciting for listeners?
Ans: To make a story exciting for listeners, I would use different voices for each character, show actions with my hands, use facial expressions, and change my tone to match the mood of the story. I would also keep eye contact with the listeners and pause at the right moments to build suspense.

1. What was the name of the puppet show? Where did you watch it?
Ans: The name of the puppet show was “The Brave Little Sparrow”. I watched it at our school auditorium when a puppeteer was invited to perform.
2. What kind of puppets were used in the show (e.g., king, lion, bird)? What do you think the puppets were made of?
Ans: The show used bird puppets, a fox puppet, and a farmer puppet. I think the puppets were made of cloth, wood, and paper, with painted faces and colourful feathers or clothes.
3. What was the puppeteer doing? How was he/she moving the puppet? Did the puppeteer interact with the audience or with the puppet? If yes, how?
Ans: The puppeteer was standing behind a curtain and moving the puppets using strings (marionette style). Sometimes the puppeteer spoke directly to the audience, asking questions or making jokes, and at other times spoke through the puppet’s voice using different tones.
4. What was the most interesting scene in the puppet show? Why did you find it interesting?
Ans: The most interesting scene was when the little sparrow tricked the fox and saved its family. I liked it because it was funny and exciting, and the puppeteer used fast movements and a sharp voice for the fox, which made it very lively.
5. Were elements, like sound, light, backdrop or anything else used that made the show interesting?
Ans: Yes, the show used background music, animal sound effects, and colourful lights that changed with each scene. The backdrop was painted like a forest, which made the setting feel real and engaging.

Ans: I selected the story “The Clever Crow” because it is short, simple, and has a clear lesson about using intelligence to solve problems. It also has some action (the crow drops stones into the pitcher) that makes it interesting for a puppet show.

(a) Stage.
1. Where will you do the puppet show?
Ans: We will do the puppet show in the classroom by setting up a table covered with a bedsheet as the stage, with enough space for the audience.
2. Where will you keep puppets during the show?
Ans: We will keep the puppets hidden behind the cloth covering the table so the audience cannot see them before they are used.
(b) Backdrop.
1. Briefly describe the backdrop(s) you have prepared.
Ans: We have prepared a jungle backdrop with trees and animals for the first scene and a village backdrop with huts for the second scene, drawn on chart paper.
(c) Props.
1. Briefly describe the props you have prepared.
Ans: We have prepared cardboard trees, paper fruits, a cardboard chair (throne), and a paper sword. All props are light and easy for the puppeteer to use.
