Early Life and Education of Sumitranandan Pant
Sumitranandan Pant was born on May 20, 1900, in Kausani village in Almora district. Which is located in Uttarakhand. His father’s name was Ganga Dutta Pant and his mother’s name was Saraswati Devi. His father served as the manager of a local tea garden and was also a landholder. His mother died shortly after his birth. He was brought up by his grandmother. He was the youngest of seven of their siblings. In his childhood, he was named Gohain Dutta. He didn’t like the name, so he changed his name to Sumitranandan Pant. At the age of seven, Pant started writing poems.
Pant completed his early education in Almora and moved to Banaras to attend high school with his brother. While he was studying at Queen’s College in Banaras in 1918, he began reading the works of Sarojini Naidu and Rabindranath Tagore as well as English Romantic poets. In 1919 he moved to Allahabad to study at Muir College and graduated from Allahabad University. During the Satyagraha movement, Kavi Pant left his studies and went to the movement to support Mahatma Gandhi. He could never continue his studies again, but at home, he continued to study Hindi, Sanskrit, and Bengali literature.
By about 1918 he was recognized as the leading poet of the new genre of Hindi. His famous poetry collection “Pallav” was published in 1926-27. This collection established him as a literary giant of the Hindi Renaissance that had begun with Jaishankar Prasad. After some time he came to Almora. Where he was influenced by Karl Marx and Freud’s ideals. In 1938, he started a monthly letter called “Rupav”. He joined All India Radio from 1955 to 1962 and served as the chief producer.
