1. What is energy conservation and how can it be conserved at household level? 

Ans: Energy conservation is a practice in which energy is conserved by avoiding the usage of unnecessary energy or wastage of energy. 

Energy can be conserved in households in many ways by turning off the light when not in use, by unplugging the electrical appliances, and using energy-efficient devices.

2. How is energy conservation possible while constructing buildings? Explain with the example of some energy efficient buildings. 

Ans: Energy conservation is possible during the construction of buildings by:

(i) Using energy-saving materials like fly ash bricks, hollow concrete blocks, and reflective roofing materials.

(ii) Ensuring proper insulation and sealing to reduce heat loss and cooling demand.

(iii) Designing for natural ventilation and daylighting to minimize dependence on artificial lighting and air-conditioning.

(iv) Installing solar panels, rainwater harvesting systems, and energy-efficient appliances.

(v) Incorporating green roofs and passive solar design to maintain indoor comfort naturally.

4. How can energy efficient towns be designed? 

Ans: Energy-efficient towns can be designed through eco-friendly planning and sustainable technologies. Green spaces, parks, and tree belts are developed to reduce heat islands and improve air quality, while compact settlements are encouraged to minimize commuting distances. The transport system is made energy efficient by introducing bicycle lanes, pedestrian pathways, and reliable public transport such as metro and electric buses, along with promoting hybrid and electric cars. Houses and buildings are constructed with energy-efficient materials, proper insulation, and fitted with solar panels. Rooftop rainwater harvesting and waste recycling systems are also integrated. For energy and water management, renewable energy sources like solar and wind are adopted, and water is conserved through recycling, wastewater treatment, and smart irrigation. Community participation is equally important, with awareness programs to promote eco-friendly practices. A good example is Auroville in Tamil Nadu, which incorporates renewable energy, eco-housing, and community-based resource management, making it a model of an energy-efficient town.

5. Define the concept of energy auditing. How can it be helpful in energy conservation? 

Ans: The process of understanding the use of energy on the basis of business analysis is called energy auditing. Energy auditing can be used to conserve energy by proposing improvements to help save energy and eventually reduce electricity utility bills.

6. Mention the advantages and limitations of using solar energy. 

Ans: Solar energy is defined as the energy which is obtained from solar radiation. The advantages of solar energy such as it reduce electricity bills, it has diverse applications, and it has low maintenance costs. Despites of several advantages of solar energy, it has several limitations also such as, it is weather dependent, solar energy is expensive, uses a lot of space, etc.

7. Write short note on importance of energy in your daily life. 

Ans: Energy is present in our daily life. We need the energy to work, walk, move, play, eat everything. Apart from that energy is also used in household works, schools, and businesses. Energy is also used as fuel. Therefore, energy serves as a very important factor in our lives.

8. Justify the statement that ‘the energy is most important input for economic growth and human development. 

Ans: Energy serves as the most important input for economíc growth and human development. This is because most of the modern services are based upon different types of forms of energy as the energy affects health, education, safe water and communication.

9. How can we conserved energy at community level for housing complexes.

Ans: Energy can be conserved at the community level for housing complexes by adjusting day-to-day behavior which includes replacement of light bulbs, use of smart power strips, use of energy-efficient appliances and installment of smart thermostats.
