Chapter: 15

Unit – 4 Sports For All

Activity 3:

1. Do you think focusing on one sport at a young age is helpful or harmful?

Ans: Focusing on just one sport at a young age (early specialisation) is generally harmful. While some believe it creates star athletes, experts warn that intense, early focus often leads to overuse injuries, burnout, social isolation, and even stunted growth. Many top athletes actually avoid early specialisation and only focus on one sport once they reach their teenage years.

2. What might be a healthy way to balance fun, training, and rest for young athletes?

Ans: A healthy balance involves encouraging young athletes to play multiple sports and engage in unstructured free play (like running or climbing), which naturally develops their motor skills and coordination without the pressure of competition. Furthermore, training should be balanced by ensuring young athletes do not train more hours per week than their age, and that they focus on building overall physical and mental strength in a safe, supportive environment free from pressure.

EXERCISES

1. Why are weight categories used in some sports?

Ans: Weight categories are used in certain sports to make competitions safer and fairer. Grouping athletes by weight ensures that participants compete against others of similar size and strength, giving everyone a fair chance to compete and safely enjoy the game.

2. How does puberty affect strength and muscle development?

Ans: Before puberty, the strength levels of boys and girls are quite similar. However, during and after puberty, boys gain more muscle mass, which significantly increases their overall strength and power.

3. Do students of the same age differ in height and strength?

Ans: Yes, students of the exact same age can look very different in height, strength, and build because everyone grows and develops at their own unique pace. For example, a 13-year-old who matures early may be much taller and stronger than another 13-year-old who is still growing.
