Let Us Reflect:
1. Which barrier do you think hinders participation the most? Discuss with your classmates and try to identify possible solutions.
Ans: I think attitudinal barriers hinder participation the most. When people have negative attitudes, stereotypes, or prejudices towards persons with disabilities, it can prevent them from participating fully in education, sports, and social activities.
Possible Solutions:
- Create awareness about disabilities and inclusion.
- Treat everyone with respect and equality.
- Encourage inclusive education and sports.
- Provide support and equal opportunities for all.
- Promote positive attitudes through campaigns and community programs.

1. Name the five broad categories of disabilities as recognised by the WHO and RPwD Act, 2016.
Ans: The broad categories of disabilities classified by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 (India) include physical, sensory, intellectual, learning, psychosocial, and multiple disabilities.
2. What are adapted sports? How many sports are currently included in the Paralympic Games?
Ans: Adapted sports are sports that feature changes in rules, equipment, or the playing environment to ensure that everyone, regardless of their disability, can participate and feel welcome. Currently, there are 28 sports included in the Paralympic Games, which are divided into 22 summer sports and 6 winter sports.
3. Are accessible playgrounds important for inclusion? Justify.
Ans: Yes, accessible playgrounds are highly important for inclusion. A lack of accessible playgrounds is one of the most common barriers that prevent people with disabilities from taking part in physical activities. Without proper infrastructure like ramps and rails, individuals with disabilities are unfairly excluded from participating. By building accessible sports facilities, schools and communities can overcome these physical barriers and make sports truly inclusive for everyone.
