(a) What are natural resources?

Ans: Natural resources are the materials and substances found in nature that are useful to living beings, such as air, water, soil, sunlight, minerals, and forests.

(b) How many types of natural resources are there and what are these?

Ans: Natural resources are of two types:

(i) Renewable resources (e.g. sunlight, water, air).


(ii) Non-renewable resources (e.g. coal, petroleum, minerals).

(c) What is renewable natural resource and what is non renewable natural resource?

Ans: Renewable resources are those that are naturally replenished, like air, water, sunlight.

Non-renewable resources are those that cannot be replaced once used, like coal and petroleum.

(d) Why the sun is called the main source of energy?

Ans: The sun provides light and heat to the Earth. It helps plants to make food, supports life, and enables processes like the water cycle and photosynthesis.

(e) Why we should conserve rainwater?

Ans: Rainwater is a natural and clean source of water. Conserving it helps to recharge groundwater, reduce water scarcity, and meet household and agricultural needs.

6. Why should we use alternative energy?

11. You know that if we keep a pot full of water outside under sun-shine it will be hot. What other things you can do by using the heat from the sum? 

Ans: If we keep a pot full of water outside under sunshine, it becomes hot because of the sun’s heat. 

Other things we can do by using the heat from the sun are:

(i) Dry clothes by hanging them under sunlight.

(ii) Dry food grains, fruits, and vegetables for preservation.

(iii) Use solar cookers to cook food using the sun’s heat.

(iv) Heat water for bathing or other uses.

(v) Generate electricity using solar panels that absorb sunlight.

12. Why petrol, diesel etc. are considered as non-renewable natural resource? 

Ans: Petrol, diesel, and similar fuels are considered non-renewable natural resources because they take millions of years to form from the remains of dead plants and animals buried under the earth. Once we use these fuels, they cannot be replaced within a human lifetime.

13. What can you do at your home to conserve non renewable resources?

Ans: (i) Switch off lights/fans when not needed.

(ii) Use bicycles or walk.

(iii) Use LPG efficiently.

(iv) Avoid wastage of fuel.

14. Although most of the earth’s surface is covered with water, the amount of usable water is very negligible. So how you can make your friends aware to prevent wastage of water?

Ans: Yes, besides government programs, we also plant trees on special occasions like birthdays, festivals, and school events. These moments provide a meaningful opportunity to contribute to the environment, celebrate life, and encourage others to join in protecting nature.

Ans: One important day dedicated to the conservation of natural resources is World Environment Day, which is celebrated every year on 5th June. On this day, people around the world come together to raise awareness about protecting the environment, conserving natural resources, and promoting sustainable living for a healthier planet.
