1. Write the concept of mental health. 

Ans : Mental health is a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community. It is an integral component of health and well-being that underpins our individual and collective abilities to make decisions, build relationships and shape the world we live in. Mental health is a basic human right. And it is crucial to personal, community and socio-economic development. Mental health is more than the absence of mental disorders. It exists on a complex continuum, which is experienced differently from one person to the next, with varying degrees of difficulty and distress and potentially very different social and clinical outcomes. Mental health conditions include mental disorders and psychosocial disabilities as well as other mental states associated with significant distress, impairment in functioning, or risk of self-harm. People with mental health conditions are more likely to experience lower levels of mental well-being, but this is not always or necessarily the case.

2. Define mental hygiene. 

Ans Mental hygiene is a branch of psychology which ideas with the mental, behaviour and emotional adjustment through the application of principles and practices which have some scientific foundations or truth. It consists of those patterns of living which promotes the development of wholesome and socially adequate personality and helps an individual get along with himself and with his fellowmen. Through it ,the goal of mental health is achieved, so that mental hygiene may be considered as the means to an end.

i) We can never judge a person from outside and say that a person is mentally healthy.

Ans : One of the conditions of attention is objective condition. Following are the objective conditions of attention. 

a) Intensity of stimulus:- With other conditions being equal a strong stimulus attracts attention more then a weak one 

b)  Change:- Objects which have their unusual look do not attract one’s attention. On the sudden change in the stimulus,it is likely to attract attention.

c) Novelty:- Newness attracts attention. It is a factor of advantage in attention. The child is attracted by a new dress. New objects will easily catch our attention naturally.

d) Movement:- Movement is a clear factor of advantage. Moving object will easily attract one’s attention. The teacher should also show pictures depicting motion.

The subjective conditions of attention are :

(a) Instincts:- Attention is led by instincts – If a child is thirsty, it tends to get water. The same procedure is followed to acquire knowledge when one tends to be curious. Hence our instincts propel our attention to specific objects.

(b) Intention:- Desire or intention plays an important factor in determining our attention. The desire to learn will include the child to learn more.

(c) Habit:- Habit and training determine our attention. A child with good habits is generally attentive.

(d) Heredity:- Certain traits of an individual are inherited from the parents.

Mental health is related to physical health:- Our bodies and minds are not separate, so it’s not surprising that mental ill health can affect our body. Depression can come with headaches, fatigue and digestive problems, and anxiety can create an upset stomach, for example:- other symptoms can include insomnia, restlessness and difficulty concentrating.

Ans : (i) Mental hygiene:- Mental hygiene is a significant aspect of Psychology. It is the science that creates a personality in every individual in society that makes for good adjustment with the environment that attains a proper synthesis between the intellectual, emotional and physical aspects, that is satisfied and optimistic, that experiences a minimum of tension and conflict in its conduct with other individuals in society. 

Hygiene is nothing but the set of rules for health. It is the science of healthy living. No one would like to be ignorant of health and its rules. Thus health and Hygiene are very important as subjects and a proper knowledge of the rules of health and hygienes shall help us a great deal in our lives. In the field of education, where we wish to have healthy pupils, in our educational institutions, it is very significant that from the very beginning healthy habits must be formed by them. For this end in view, a proper training in the rules of Health and Hygiene is imported to the teacher trainees in the training institutions. 

(ii) Mental health:- Mental health has  specific importance for a better and balanced growth of personality. To lead a good life everybody should possess good mental health. For the progress of individual and the social life as well mental health should be quite sound. Without sound mental health no individual can lead a peaceful life. For education also, there is the need of sound mental health. If our children become poor from the mental aspect they can not properly utilize their mental potentialities. And if they failed to utilise the mental potentialities in a proper manner the process of personality growth becomes very defective. Thus, to help the individual to be mentally strong parents should be more sympathetic towards them. They should carefully look after the proper growth of emotional aspect of their children. 

Instead of harse treatment towards the childish behaviour, judicious and sympathetic attitudes should be exposed in their approaches. To treat the mentally disturbed individual, psychologists have prescribed various approaches and principles. According to them the use of sedation, good nutrition, good physical hygiene, music, games, and sports, meditation, and different leisure time activities, viz riding, walking, participating in educational tour, social services etc. Mental support, positive attitudes, encouragement friendly  behaviour etc. are some of the important step which are necessary to help the mentally ill and sick people. Fresh air, peaceful environment, and provision or routine diet etc. are also necessary to help the mentally ill or sick persons to get early relief from their problem.

(iii) Mentally Ill-health:- Mental illness in more or less inherited. It is not the result of any misdeeds. It is curable. It can easily be treated. It compels man to behave abnormally. 

(iv) Mentally healthy Person:- An individual who is able to adjust with different situations of life without any major problem can be defined as mentally healthy individual. A mentally healthy individual does not a manyfest any abnormality in facing different situations of life. Such individuals do not have any major problem of personality mal-adjustment. In a sense, a mentally healthy individual is- 

(i) physically healthy.

(ii) social well-adjustment.

(iii) emotionally stable.

(i) Home environment should be free from all types of anxiety and tensions. 

(ii) Physiological and psychological needs of children should be fulfilled in order to avoid any feelings or frustration or tension in them. 

(iii) Relationship among the family members should be cordial.

(iv) Dominant  parental behaviour i. e. rigid imposition of a disciplinary code should be avoided. 

(v) Over protection should be avoided. 

(vi) Individual differences should be considered without comparing and  another. 

(vii) Parents inculcate moral values as their children imitate them. 

(viii) Children should be orient to stressor and stress coping.

(i) Create an enabling learning environment for positive mental health and well-being:- Through developing and implementing school-based mental health and psychosocial support policies informed by learners’ needs ,voices,and capacities; and embedding mental health literacy and social and emotional learning in the curricula, from early childhood through to adolescence.

ii) Access to early intervention and mental health services and support:- Schools may ensure a well-defined process to guide learners and teachers concerned about the mental health of a learner or teacher. Early intervention helps in providing timely support to learners and their families. Learners’ learning process is molded to suit their needs with timely interventions.

iii) Promote teacher well-being:- Ensuring that there are policies, strategies, and services in place to support the mental health and well-being of teachers and non- teaching staff and all involved in the care and support of learners in school (including caregivers).

iv) Ensure meaningful collaboration between the school, family, and community:- To build a safe and nurturing learning environment that creates a sense of belonging for every learner. Emphasizing the need for strong and frequent communication between learners, caregivers, and teachers, to align understanding of the strengths and needs, and build complementary strategies and support mechanisms between the home and educational setting to meet those needs. Learners and families are active agents in their well-being and bring their skills and resources for coping and building resiliency.

Some of them are:- In the words of Hilgard (1962), ‘mental health means absence of mental illness: more positively, a state characterized by adjustment, a productive orientation and zest. To means mental illness he further explains, ‘ Mental illness means emotional, motivational and social  maladjustment severe enough to Infer with the ordinary conduct of life.’ In the words of Kosher (1964),  ‘ The progress took the form of the expansion of mental hospitals, the after-case movement, the family care system, the open-door policy and the mental hygiene movements. ‘ It was Evnil Kraepelin who was the pioneer worker of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in classification of ‘mental illness. This was primarily leased on the course of the disease, its symptoms and causes as well.
