Ans: It means the search for collection of facts of a given problem.We undertake the project work to study a specific problem.Any project work that is undertake for the study of socio-economic problems like poverty, unemployment,expenditure pattern of the households,consumer’s preferences etc.requires the collection of information or data by the investigating agency.

2. What are the steps required for the execution of a project ?

Ans: The steps required for the execution of a project are : 

(a) The purpose of project must be specified.

(b) Identifying a problem or an area of study. 

(c) Choice of target group or determination of the scope or population.

(d) Determine the sources of information or collection of data . 

(e) Techniques of data collection.

(f) Organisation and presentation of data.

(g) Analysis and Interpretation of data , i.e. selection of statistical units.

3. What is statistical units ? 

Ans: It is that basis of measurement in terms of which data are collected , analysed and interpreted. Hence, before starting the work of collection of data, unit of measurement or counting must be properly selected or defined.The use of vague and improper units lead to the collection of misleading statistical material.

4. What are the requirements of statistical units ?  

Ans: The requirements of statistical units are : 

(a) It should be suitable to the subject of enquiry.

(b) It should be simple, clear and unambiguous.  

(c) It must be stable and standardised .  

(d) It must ensure homogeneity and uniformity.  

(e) It must be definite, specific and ascertainable.  

5. What are the considerations that should be kept in notice in carrying out a project ?  

Ans :The considerations that should be kept in notice in carrying out a project are :

(a) The survey should not be undertaken without contacting the head of the family, otherwise there will be every possibility of not getting correct information . 

(b) Material collected should not be used against the informants.  

(c) Student must have some grasp of the local language. 

(d) The informant should be asked anything related to their personal life and not included in the schedule.  

(e) The survey should be conducted during that time, when the informants can normally be expected to remain in their homes,say,for example,in the evening hours.
