Ans: The differences between disc wheels and alloy wheels are as under:

Ans: For friction-free rotation of wheels, it is necessary to lubricate the wheel hub and wheel bearing at specified intervals. Bearing grease is used to lubricate these items.

 2. Differentiate between wheel hub and wheel axle?

Ans: The differences between wheel hub and wheel axle are as under:

Wheel hub is a single casted unit mounted on stub axle shaft or on the casing.The front main axle is connected to the stub axle.

Ans: The advantages of rotation of wheels are as under:

(i) It helps to reduce tyre wear.

(ii) It ensures even wear on all tyres.

(iii) It improves vehicle handling and control.

(iv) It increases tyre life.

(v) It improves fuel efficiency.

(vi) It ensures better safety and comfort while driving.

(vii) It is recommended that all four wheels should be shifted crosswise after every 10,000 km run of the vehicle or as per specification.

3. Differentiate between tyres and tubes.

Ans: The differences between tyres and tubes are as under:

Tyres may be of two types: Tube tyres and Tubeless tyres.Tubes are used inside tube-type tyres.
The outer portion of tyre rolls on the road surface and is made of synthetic rubber.Tube is a separate inflatable part fitted inside the tyre.
Generally heavier than a tube due to its robust construction.Relatively lighter than the tyre casing.

4. Give the advantages of tubeless tyres.

Ans:  Advantages of Tubeless Tyre:

(i) The tubeless tyres are lighter and run cooler than tubed tyre. 

(ii) The main advantage is that it retains air for a long period even after being punctured by nail, provided the nail remains in the tyre. But the  tube tyre releases the air almost immediately after being punctured.

(iii) Any hole in the tubeless tyre can be repaired simply by rubber plugging. 

(iv) Ordinary punctures can be repaired with removing the tyre from the wheel. 

(v) It can be retreated in the same manner as the tube tyre.

SESSION 4: REPAIRING OF PINCTURED TUBE

Ans: The process of puncture repairing are as under:

(iii) Apply cold patch adhesive solvent on and around the puncture area and leave it for a few minutes to dry.

(iv) Remove the cover from cold patch and place it centrally on the punctured portion of the tube in mini press unit and press the cold patch.

(v) After repairing, fill air in the tube and check for leakage.

(vi) Before refitting, apply white powder (French chalk powder) inside the tyre.

(vii) Fit the tyre bed on the wheel rim properly or use tyre removing machine.

(viii) Fix the wheel back on the hub, tighten the nut diagonally to specified torque, fill recommended air pressure and remove the jack.

2. Give the difference between hot and cold process of puncture repairing.

Ans: The differences  between hot and cold process of puncture repairing are as under:

Cold Patch MethodHot Patch Method
(i) Dry off the punctured tube.(i) Carried out with the help of small vulcanising machine.
(ii) Rub the punctured portion using fine grade emery paper or rasp or rubber file.(ii) Clean the punctured part using emery paper or rasp file.
(iii) Apply cold patch adhesive solvent on and around the puncture area and leave it for few minutes to dry.(iii) Apply adhesive solvent (black in colour) on the puncture area.
(iv) Remove the cover from cold patch and place it centrally on the punctured portion of the tube in mini press unit and press the cold patch.(iv) Cut a piece of rubber and place it centrally over the puncture, then press it.
(v) After repairing, fill air in the tube and check for leakage.(v) Place the punctured portion downward on the heater plate and tighten the vulcaniser hand wheel so the pressure plate presses the tube.

3. How is tubeless puncture repairing done?

Ans: One of the advantages of tubeless tyre is that while repairing the puncture, the tyre need not be detached from the wheel rim.

Instruments and materials required:

(i) Bodkin.

(ii) Wire brush.

(iii) Cold patch adhesive solvent.

(iv) Rubber plugs of different diameter.
